This might have pit potential so if has go please move it.
Every since I have come across this message board, I have read alot of different things. People have thier opinions about alot of different situations. But they have a right to. On that note, I have read alot of threads that bitch about how the USA is ran. I have seen threads talk about the best way to leave it. If you live in the states you have the right to bitch and moan about any thing. But how did we get these rights? Everyone seems to be forgetting what this country is truely about. We have these rights because others before us who knew that things were wrong fought to make things right. Now granted there are alot of things that are fucked up with the government but instead of bitching about it why dont you step forward and try to do something about it. We setup the system to work for us. If it’s not working then we can change it. granted it’s hard but everything takes time. I for one love this country I will die for this country. I have problems with some of the laws but I abide by them. Everything that is in effect today was voted for by all of us. Take a look around the world. What we and a couple of other countries have people are still killing each other over to obtain. I dont really know where im going with this. Im just pissed off and this topic just set me off. But like I said I have the right.
Bitchin about the way your country is run is democracy not undermining.
Try complaining openly in Burma and see what happens.
Bitchin, like it or not, is the first step in gauging public opinion and if you disagree with that opinion you are free to give voice to that.
Having been a union rep at a very low level I can sympathise with your comment.
People would complain to me about some aspect of their work but sometimes it would just boil down to ‘I don’t like my job’
I often found myself thinking ‘Well if you hate it so much either leave or get up off your ass and change instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you’
At the end of it though they do have freedom of speech.
If the “colors” hadn’t bitched, the Civil
Rights movement never would have happend.
if the “girls” hadn’t bitchen, where would
Women’s Rights be. If the “cripples” hadn’t
bitched, Stephen Hawking would have spent
his life in an institution.
This is the best country in the world, and I
would never live anywhere else. But there are
things wrong with it; and if bitching brings
positive change, then let’s all BITCH!!!
There is a difference between bitching about it and doing. My whole point was to stop bitching a do something about it. I of all people know that bitching about a problem is the start of change. I just want to make sure other people know that.
In another thread I pointed this out: If you don’t like the way things are then YOU need to change them.
UncleBeer I think you took that a bit too literally.
Most of the laws are there because the people “voted into power” legislated it. You didn’t vote for them? Did you vote? When the issue (what ever it was) was on the table did you write/call/communicate where you stood on it?
Some decisions are made without mass input but even with that, you have input in who you send to be your representative.
Get your ass out there and get involved. You can bitch and moan until the cows come home but, and I know this is trite, “if you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem”.
I’ve gotten drug houses, gang houses and prostitutes out of my neighborhood by being involved. It takes guts. It takes courage. It takes me standing up saying, “I don’t like this” and doing something about it. You can too.
These are lyrics from a song by the Dead Kennedys, it’s called “Stars and Stripes of Corruption”
Later, talking about people who don’t want to work for real freedom:
Okay, now I’ll speak for myself:
The problem with the country is that people think that they can’t make a difference. Half of the eligible voters didn’t vote in the last presidential election.
The people in the 1960’s made a difference. Vietnam ended. The people in Seattle last year made a difference. The faults of the World Trade Organization come into public view. Next week 35,000 people are expected to protest the GOP convention.
The OP is right in suggesting that people need to stop being spectators in their own lives and get off their butts and do something about the oppression they face every day.
We may be the best country on Earth, but that’s pretty depressing when you get down to it. We have a one party state masquerading as a two party state, and third party candidates are written off as “spoilers.” A few votes in the right direction can force the Republicrats to change a little bit. Every vote makes a difference, and a vote can be action enough.
I meant that we,the people at some point voted for a law or some type of legislation to go through. In turn that put into power what ever law or function that is now working.
