Since the first presidential election I was eligible to vote in, my candidate has won 71% of the time (5 out of 7). It helped that I started out conservative and became disillusioned during GWB’s second term. But even if I regret some of my votes in hindsight, it’s still a pretty good record. How’s yours?
'88: Bush (beat Dukakis)
'92: Bush (lost to Clinton)
'96: Dole (lost to Clinton)
'00: Bush (beat Gore)
'04: Bush (beat Kerry)
'08: Obama (beat McCain)
'12: Obama (beat Romney)
4 for 7. I’ve voted in the same elections as you, Skammer, but always Democrat. I could’ve voted in 1984, but didn’t like either Mondale or Reagan, and so forsake my civic duty.
I missed on Reagan-Carter. I was young and didn’t realize the appeal Reagan had to the older generation. I missed on Bush-Gore also. Well anyway I missed on the result, not the way people intended. Those were my picks, but I often voted for third party candidates. Usually Harold Stassen.
I won on Reagan, Clinton twice and Obama twice and lost on Dukakis, Gore and Kerry. But I paraphrase Otto from A Fish Called Wanda: we didn’t lose on Gore, it was a tie!
2 for 6. Of course I had a tendency to vote for 3rd party candidates. And I never expected them to win. So in elections where my vote might have counted I’m 2 for 3.
I can’t for the life of me remember how I voted in 88, my first time voting. Otherwise I’ve got a fifty percent sucess rate (if that’s the correct term).
