Oh. :smack:
But, Sol, I thought you were taken?
Oh. :smack:
But, Sol, I thought you were taken?
What’s your sign?
Another Sag.
Do you put a lot of stock in planetary movements and destiny?
Stock? No. I’m still waiting for scientific evidence. But I am interested in the effects that planetary movement has on our planet, and possibly the humans who live here.
Oddly, though, I do find myself attracted to men who, about 80 percent of the time, turn out to be Leos.
Do you know anyone who really, truly, bases major decisions on what their horoscope says?
Not personally, but I’ve known of them.
What’s your sign?
Virgo.
Do you put a lot of stock in planetary movements and destiny?
None. It’s completely ridiculous.
Do you know anyone that really, truly, bases major decisions on what their horoscope says?
Probably, but I’ve never asked her straight out. I’ve had all the stupid I can take from her.
Because I’m not an astrogoler, I’m woefuly ignorant of what’s going on. There’s no prophecy to fufill. When I notice that, say, my father and I are incapable of communicating right now no matter how clear I think I’m being (not normal for us), I’ll call my friend Kristie, not tell her why I’m asking, but ask her to take a look at my chart. “Ohh! Your Mercury is oppposing your Saturn right now” (or something. I’m making all these up for examples sake.) “You might find communication with your dad or other male authority figures to be a little tough if right now. And Mars is conjunct, which means a confrontational approach might not be the best. Maybe sweet-talking him would work better.” Enough times like this, and I start to think that, hell, why not call Kristie and see what’s going on? Am I going to stop talking to my dad when things go icky? No. But Kristie’s really good at noticing and interpreting charts in useful ways like that. It’s one more tool in my box.
For a newspaper “horoscope”, you’re right. They are so vague as to be universally applicable, and therefore useless. This is because, as I mentioned earlier, they use only your sun sign, which isn’t all that useful. It’s like saying, “People named John should watch out for muggings today.” Well, yeah, maybe. But so should Sallies and Nicks and everyone else. A full horoscope is more like saying, “John J. Smith of 123 Specific Street, This Town, USA - a rash of muggings has been occuring on your block in the last 48 hours and the perpitrator is still at large - you might want to carry a can of pepper spray with you today.”
If your astrologer is being vague, it’s because you gave them lousy info or they’re not very good. I like to read or hear their interpretations of other people’s horoscope, as well as my own. If they all feel like they apply to me, I know we’re being to vague here.
Even better, give them birth info on someione they don’t know, and see what they say. One common Final Exam in astrology classes is to give the students a natal wheel (birth info obscured) of a famous person and have them interpret and guess who the person is.
Also, astrolology is not like Tarot or other “cold-reading”. You don’t get someone’s birth info and then go into trance and say whatever comes into your head. Each planet and sign and house has a predetermined meaning. The number of degrees in the angle formed by each planet tell you whether something is square (90), conjunct (er…180?), trine (60) or whathave you. These relationships tell you how each meaning of each planet influences the whole and each other in a very straightforward formula. What those meanings and formulas are, I don’t know. Kristie does.
sigh.
Obviously, he swooned gently at your feet, falling gently into the pillows you placed there so your adoring fans would have something to cushion their fall.
Too bad I moved them behind you so you would have something to cushion your fall when you were inundated by the hordes of Sagittarians riding through…
What’s your sign?
I’m a Scorpio and Sagittarius. Born on a cusp: November 22. But I lean more toward Sagittarius because it’s also my rising and moon sign. I’m a Sagittarian triple threat!
Do you put a lot of stock in planetary movements and destiny?
No but I can make astrological charts for people if they’re interested.
Do you know anyone that really, truly, bases major decisions on what their horoscope says?
Nope. But when I make astrological charts, a lot of past behavior or interpersonal stuff seems to have an astrological “explanation”. For instance, I began dating a guy early this year who was born on the same day as my mother so that set off warning bells in the back of my head. Sure enough, the relationship ended in badness.
**What’s your sign?**Tropical, or sidereal? :dubious:
**Do you put a lot of stock in planetary movements . . .**Hell, yeah! Kepler’s laws, the equation of time, the vis viva equaton, perturbations, osculating orbital elements, epicyclic approximations, warped Laplace planes, precession, regression, resonances, chaotic zones . . .
**and destiny?**Pffft.
**Do you know anyone that really, truly, bases major decisions on what their horoscope says?**No, thank goodness.
And just like any other type of cold reading, these “influences” are subject to the confirmation bias. Your issues with your father’s communication were a big hit. Probably a big enough hit that you’ve forgotten all the different things that your astrologer said that didn’t have a great deal of applicability to your situation.
When astrologers were tested in exactly this way under controlled conditions, they did no better at matching charts to people if they drew names out of a hat. (Carlson, 1985,
“A Double-Blind Test of Astrology,” Nature, 318, 419.)
What’s your sign?
Leo sun with Aquarius rising…Leo moon, Virgo mercury, Sag mars…there’s more, but can’t remember.
Do you put a lot of stock in planetary movements and destiny?
When I was a Psych major in college, I was intrigued by the fact that Carl Jung seemed to put a tremendous amount of stock in astrology - at least in terms of how the particular planetary placements gave the individual certain procllivities. Granted, Jung is a bit out there…I have a good friend who explained astrological charts/ houses etc…to me. When she did my chart I have to say it did fit me…Although I can’t imagine actually divining your everyday activitites around what a newspaper horoscope says. Still, I find it entertaining. Wouldn’t base major decisions on the stars however…
Do you know anyone that really, truly, bases major decisions on what their horoscope says?
The aforementioned friend doesn’t base major decisions on astrology, so I’d have to say no.
I’m a Capricorn (Dec 26) and I think it is total bullshit based on the fact that not a singular astrologer has ever gotten my personality or the date of my birth right. You would think that at least 30% of what they say would fit me, but most of what they say about me seems to be the exact opposite of my personality. I’ve known professional astrologers and they seem to be even more off than the newspaper ones. One guy excused it away by claiming that I was a “walk-in” which was the last time I bothered talking to an astrologer.
Furthermore, the star signs are off. I’m sagittarius, if you go by what was actually in the stars at the moment of my birth. All you scorpios? You are really libras.
1.) Virgo. August 26.
2.) I had a sarcastic answer all lined up, but it sounded to snarky and I thought people might take me seriously. So, no, of course not. Astrological insight seems valid because people choose the stuff that’s relevant to them and ignore the stuff that isn’t. Also a good astrologer should be a competent armchair shrink. If I tell you to dump that loser of a boyfriend it may be sound advice, but adding a bunch of stuff about the moon being in the seventh house doesn’t make it any more valid.
3.) I used to. Mostly they were decent people, and I’d let it go. If they asked me I might argue with them, but I’d try to keep it polite.
What’s your sign?
Virgo, Sept 5
Do you put a lot of stock in planetary movements and destiny?
No, but my boss does. Practically everything I do is explained away because I’m a Virgo.
Do you know anyone that really, truly, bases major decisions on what their horoscope says?
Nope. I’d be very :dubious: if I met anyone who could do their own chart.
What’s your sign?
Cancer, July 9
Do you put a lot of stock in planetary movements and destiny?
Only if they diverge from their predicted orbits - in my direction
Do you know anyone that really, truly, bases major decisions on what their horoscope says?
Probably (I live in Northern California).
Yay! Another shared birthday!
In reference to the OP, I don’t really put a lot of stock in planetary movements. I do tend to read my horoscope at the end of the day to see if it was right.
Happy (slightly belated) birthday, ivylass!
