For purposes of the poll, let’s say message boards don’t count as social media, but feel free to comment on your message board habits also. For instance, I mostly post about my hobby and share family and friend photos on Facebook, though I’m more willing to venture into political debates here.
More importantly, what do you think of other people’s styles? I rarely post memes, but I have two friends who are incredible meme curators. They find the funniest shizz out there and only post the pure gold. Most people in my feed are not that good at it, and I wish they’d stick to original content. Some people share their personal struggles in a way that’s either funny or moving; some just become tiresome. I’m sure some of them get tired of my fish pix.
I used to have a Twitter account that automatically posted the mass and duration of all of my cat’s shits, but the cat is no more and I shut it down. Aside from reading the random tweet here and there, there’s nothing. I’ve blocked Facebook completely with my adblocker.
Someone looked at me like I’m from Mars for that, and my response was “I already waste too much time on my laptop, why would you want me to waste MORE of my life?”
As I’ve argued before, I firmly and unequivocally reject that definition .
But remove message boards from the equation and it is mostly some light lurking on twitter and an absolutely tiny amount of lurking on Facebook (I do not have a twitter account, I do have a Facebook account that has not been used in years). To the point on the latter that it is less lurking than occasionally casually glancing at once in a great, great while.
I do prowl through YouTube, but almost never Instagram, TikTok or similar platforms.
I voted “lurker” but probably more accurately half way between lurker and non existent. I have a “twitter” and a “linked in” account but I’m much more apt to spend time on blog sites like SDMB or other sites about cars, football, etc.
I replied “nonexistent”. Sometimes someone here posts a link to Twitter and I may click on it out of interest. And sometimes Twitter blocks what I wanted to see with a huge splash screen asking me to log in or register. Fuck that shit. The option I choose is “close tab”. The only good thing about Twitter is that they banned the Orange Peril.
I chose “Lurker”. I have a FB acct and check it a few times per week. I’ve posted nothing original (starting a thread) since 2020. I’ve made 4 posts in my entire history with photos/videos of my adult kids – all with their permission. I’ve made one comical post with a picture of me (carefully cropped). My only responses are Birthday/Anniversary good wishes.
I have no Twitter account, not because I’m “above” it or something, I just don’t need one for the small footprint I keep social-media-wise. If I found a need due to certain hobbies or friends I would open one.
The only thing I do regularly is Google random shit to see how FB tries to advertise. It’s comical sometimes. My last effort resulted in weeks of ads for crotchless panties and business jets. If I’m going to be subjected to algorithms, I might as well have fun with them.
Sharing photos and mundane stories of my day - the sorts of things one talks about at work or over lunch. I’ll occasionally share memes, I generally avoid politics, and hobby-related posts are occasional but not all-consuming. My social media presence is mostly regular idle chit-chat.
Dang! Sorry I missed that. That’s one of the few subjects on which I consider myself an expert.
Condolences.
I don’t do any social media. But to me, I can see using Facebook to keep families/friend groups in touch. Instead of the old round-robin letter with Polaroids enclosed (or the phone tree), everyone can see a video of the latest grandchild’s first steps immediately and gush appropriately. News is available to all instantly.
What I don’t understand (and I guess I’m too old to EVER understand) is the appeal of living your entire life in front of the indifferent world in/on social media. Pictures/comments on every purchase, every thought, every plate of food eaten in a restaurant (!)… share-share-share… dear God, who really wants to know every time you sneeze or fart?
I said photos with family and friends, as all I have is an instragram account and about 20 followers. I post about 4 times per year. Some of our kids post a little more than that. It’s a very small thing, but it’s positive. I created a twitter account once, but I don’t go there. Don’t have facebook or myspace.
I was going to choose “lurker”, but I do regularly check/post on a MB about uptight bass, and I established a FB account because that is how the folk I jam with regularly communicate.
But, besides these boards, that’s it. I have no FB friends outside of my immediate family and nieces/nephews, I’ve never read/written a tweet…
By far, my most common on-line social interaction is directed email w/ people I know.
Given the OP’s definition excludes the SDMB, and most of us are steady SDMB posters, that isn’t at all surprising.
Is someone posted a similar poll on Facebook, but says by definition Facebook isn’t included, it would likely have the same result: people saying they don’t do social media.
I voted “hobby” because most of my posting is about one or another of my hobbies. But… That would include puzzles, dancing, baking, and gardening. And with all that, I’m not on Facebook often, and that’s pretty much my only social media outside of chat sites like this, and private discord groups.
