Here’s mine: Load up some hungry baby’s formula with laxative, and put the little tyke in Trumps hands while the camera’s are rolling. When the baby shits on him, he may punch out the baby, throw it across the room, or start ranting at the baby and how it must hate him.
I don’t think a strategy is needed–just stand back and let it happen.
That said, I’ve come to the opinion that nothing he does is going to hurt him with his core fans. I read an article this morning in which two of his supporters said Khan had no business “attacking” Trump. I can only hope there’s a rational majority in this country. We’ll see.
I think this is Hillary’s plan of attack. She’s following Napoleon’s, “Never interfere with your enemy when he is making a mistake,” strategy. Sit back and enjoy the show, let Trump dig his own grave.
I’m reasonably certain we don’t actually need to do anything. Sooner or later he’ll fatally sabotage himself. He may already have.
And to complement what Frank wrote, not only can he not hurt himself with his core fans, there’s probably not a whole lot he could do to further diminish the opinion of those who hate him.
As the Andy with too many eyes said in another thread, I love Obama’s advice to Republicans: “Distance yourself from Trump NOW!”
Nothing he could say would be likelier to prevent Republicans from distancing themselves from Trump. Now instead of acting like rats from a sinking ship, they’ll be barnacles.
It won’t make Trump look worse, but it’ll make the entire Republican party look worse. Is there a term for reverse coattails?
My strategy is to post in as many places as possible that I heard that smart people said that Trump raped a 13 year old girl. You understand I’m not saying that myself, I would never say that, I’m just saying I heard some people say this, and they were smart people, that that is the Truth, Donald Trump did rape a 13 year old girl.
Clinton ads should just be people reading things Trump has said verbatim. Moms holding their kids and reading the awful things he’s said about women. Adorable Mexican immigrant children reading his words about them being rapists. Warren Buffet reading Trump’s statements about fighting as hard as he can to pay no taxes. No commentary needed.
Yeah, I honestly think this is her best strategy. Oh, she should attack his platform, such as it is, and point out all the flaws, but as far as looking bad and putting foot to mouth, Trump simply doesn’t need any help to look worse. He’s his own worst enemy.
It’s baffling to me that this guy is a major party candidate at all…he’s SUCH a bozo.
If he only gets his hard core fans to vote for him, he’ll suffer the worst Presidential election loss since 1988 and arguably 1984. Hard core, unswayable Trumpists are, at a high end guess, 40% of the electorate. If Clinton gets 58%, you can do the math; I don’t think Trump holds on to 50 electoral votes. He’d lose Texas, and not by a small margin.
So yeah, 35-40% of people are Trumpists or just so reflexively Republican it doesn’t matter. You can’t win an election just getting the hard cores out, though.
“Stand back and let it happen” is not a safe Clinton strategy. The Khan thing is hurting Trump, and that was a deliberate trap laid by the Democrats. It didn’t just happen, it happened because they baited the hook, lured him in, and reeled him in. Morgenstern’s advice to follow Napoleon’s advice to never stop your opponent from making a mistake is fine, but the great generals always knew what kind of mistakes their opponents liked to make and gave them every opportunity to do so.
What the Democrats should do is bait Trump with more Khans. It can’t be exactly the same thing; yawn, that’s happened already. But if Trump is willing to punch down in a way that really offends people outside of the Democratic base, well, bait Trump into doing that. Really, really publically. The debates are a great opportunity to do so, assuming he’s around for them, but maybe in the meantime you can get him to insult:
The NRA. NRA folks are usually Republican but are not all Trumpists. If you can somehow goad Trump into insulting gun owners that’s votes in your pocket, and from all over the place, too; it helps win swing states but also makes places in Minnesota or Wisconsin safer.
A specific state. Right now Trump leads in Georgia, but not overwhelmingly. What if you could get him to insult Georgia? There goes sixteen electoral votes.
** Latinos. ** Obviously Trump has already insulted Mexicans, but not all Latinos are Mexican, it’s old news, and the Hispanic vote turnout is much lower than non-Hispanic whites or African-Americans. If you can energize the Hispanic vote against Trump you could flip Arizona and put Florida in the bag, which is pretty much the end of the election.
** Southerners**. Can you imagine if you could get Trump to insult Southerners as a group? Oh man. There goes North Carolina and Georgia. Maybe Texas. Mississippi is a possibility, too. Election over.
I am sure you can add items 5 6 or 7 or whatever. Trump already disgusts people who’ve already decided not to vote for him; you need more incidents to make his disgust people who might conceivably have voted for him or for Johnson or Stein or who might not have voted at all.
Based on how the Kahn thing is going, I think more of the same.
Find someone with unimpeachable credentials with the American public and have him say something bad about Trump, then sit back and watch as Trump makes an ass of himself calling the guy a loser. Unfortunately we are so polarized that its hard to find such a figure. Mister Rogers would have been perfect but alas he has passed on.
My husband’s family is Latino. I can tell you right now that they are already plenty mobilized. My mother-in-law, who has had a green card for decades but kept her Mexican citizenship, has become a US citizen specifically to vote against Trump. She lives in Texas. I’d say Trump has a big problem with the Latino base there.
