So I was getting dressed the other morning, and I realized that I wear pretty much the same thing every day: one t-shirt, often brown, usually form-fitting; one button-down shirt (usually blue or white), sleeves rolled up exactly twice, often left unbuttoned (so as to display the t-shirt); one pair flared jeans or corduroys; and black boots or sneakers. I have one silver ring that I seldom remove, a St. Jude medal that I rarely remove, and a pair of silver earrings that I never remove. I have two belts that I alternate between, and black bracelets on either wrist (jellies on one side, a goodly stack, and a leather cuff-style thingie on the other). I am, in a word, boring.
But it’s my uniform - it’s clean and looks reasonably put-together, which makes it work appropriate. The layers make it warm, which is important in Northern Michigan, home of the eight-month winter. The boots are practical, and the t-shirts and psuedo-punk jewelry give it some personality (whose personality remains unclear).
My question: Does anyone else here have a uniform? What is it? Why do you wear it? Doesn’t matter if it’s required or if you just (like me) lack sartorial creativity. I’d just like to know I’m not the only boring person out there.
Well, I don’t have to wear them, but I wear scrubs for work. Scrub pants, anyway, and a light, usually sleeveless, top. Gets hot, working with machines which have seal points of 500-600 degrees F.
On Duty: Battle Dress Uniform, commonly referred to as BDUs. Green, brown and black jungle camo top and pants, with boots. With a black baseball-cap style hat with my squadron’s patch insignia on it.
Off Duty, Going out somewhere: Jeans and a T-shirt. Sneakers. If it’s cold, a nice fleece-lined brown leather jacket.
Off Duty, Hanging out in my room: Tighty whities. Sometimes with bathrobe.
I totally have a uniform! Sometimes I’m a little embarrassed, and wonder if people notice, then I realize that I don’t really care.
My uniform consists of a black t-shirt, either long- or short-sleeved, and one of many skirts that I’ve made myself, so though they’re all made of different fabrics, they’re roughly the same pattern, and my navy blue hoodie if its chilly. I figure I look nice because I’m in a skirt, but I pick nutty fabrics and wear a hoody almost always, so I look kind of like a cleaned up gutter punk.
Since I am a student at a public school, so we can wear whatever we want. Within reason. So this is what I wear everyday:
Jeans
Hightops, ankle socks
Dark colored shirt, normaly a band t-shirt
MY office requires ‘native dress’ for us staffers.
The Saudis wear thobes and ghutras. The Sudanese wear thobes and turbans. The Filipinos wear slacks and out-of-the-pants shirts. We Americans are stuck with white shirts, slacks and ties.
T-shirt, either gray Cardinals or white Hard Rock, Arizona jeans or khaki shorts, New Balance shoes (although the flame Chuck Taylors are getting more common) and most times, a ballcap.
Navy, black, grey, olive or khaki slacks, Bass Weejuns, black socks, button down cotton oxford dress shirt, belt matching shoes, pen, watch and glasses. yawn
T-shirt, blue jeans (neither of these articles baggy or designer - unless my missus buys 'em, and then worn under protest), elastic-sided leather work boots.
Work or no work I wear either jeans or jean shorts and a t-shirt or polo.
About 3rd of my shirts are Cubs related, another 3rd beer or alcohol related, and the other 3rd either solid or “Peter 'Brady” stripes.
Probably 5-6 times per week I’m wearing an old worn out Cubs ball cap. Certainly more often than not.
The only difference between my work uni and the rest of the time is that at work I wear Nike running shoes, off work (weather permitting) I wear flip-flops.
For years being a tall woman meant I had to wear men’s clothes, to get anything long enough, so I got into the habit of wearing jeans and t-shirts/sweatshirts. Nowadays I can get women’s clothes here that fit, but I still wear jeans and t-shirts, t’is a hard habit to break
mucking around at home in the house - scrubs, or a tshirt 3 sizes too big and leggings. working outside feeding animals , jeans, tshirt, gummy wellies.
going out very casual [like running mr aru to work, not stopping anywhere or to agway for feed] jeans and tshirt like working outside.
going out casual to do grocery shopping, or doctor appoinments - black blue or brown microfiber slacks, nice blouse. what most people call office casual.
when I worked for statefarm, one step up from office casual, i guess you can call it office dressy light as opposed to office formal.
going out to dinner, movie - same microfiber slacks, or similar skirt, nice blouse [most of my dressier blouses are silk]
going out fairly formal - silk ‘salwar kameez’ or slacks and duster, black silk and silk georgette with jet beadwork.
I guess i dress a bit more forrmal than most americans, but being a fat chick i find it easier to simply maintain a better grooming standard to combat the 'fat sloppy b*tch" tag.
