I heard the Ray Charles version of “One Mint Julep” the other day and all of the sudden I was driving myself crazy trying to think of what 90s T.V. commercial used that song.
The Wiki page for the song was no help (although, I never realized was a cover, and certainly never realized the original had LYRICS!)
Hearing the music, it came back to me that I used to hear it all the time whenever the T.V. was on. Finally, it clicked in my mind that the T.V. commercial had something to do with coffee. So I Googled “One Mint Julep” and Coffee and the result was Cappio!
Cappio T.V. Commercial
O.K., NOW I remember Cappio. I was actually quite fond of it- though the portion size was QUITE small for the overpriced beverage that it was. I liked the cool narrow bottles (but again, portion size!), and I really liked the ad campaign.
So when did Cappio die?
I’m thinking it probably had to do with the rise of Starbucks. By the late 90s I was alternately calling my home two different major U.S. cities NEITHER of which had its first Starbucks yet. Soon thereafter, however, Starbucks had reached the summit of ubiquity.
