It’s a temporary marketing thing, and you can also apparently order a year’s worth of coffee in order to save money. Is it a smart financial move?
It may be a good deal if you really like characterless coffee.
Isn’t or wasn’t Maxwell House the name of a restaurant or hotel?
I thought that was a joke. Huh.
Going only on memory of something I read once, the story goes that some VIP (Teddy Roosevelt maybe?) stopped into the Maxwell House hotel/restaurant. He quite enjoyed his coffee, so much so that he told the proprietor that the coffee was “good to the last drop.”
And a brand name and slogan was born.
There is the upscale Maxwell Place apartment complex in Hoboken, NJ that is built on the location of the old Maxwell House Coffee Plant it’s named after.

Here’s some more of Maxwell house coffee roasting
Sure, as a publicity stunt, it might well be a smart move.
It’s a (small) volume discount. If you drink MH anyhow, you can get a few lbs in advance for less than full retail. The discount is more than any plausible time value of money so it’s “can’t lose” compared to year of coffee bought at a constant price. Given the volatility in bulk coffee prices, it’s still not a one-way bet despite the volume discount.
Anyone willing to drink MH on a regular basis has something wrong in their head. The few dollars saved or wasted either way over a year matters little compared to the sadness of their raging insanity and coffee incompetence.
And when it blows in the WRONG direction, you’d get a whiff of ye olde paper mill. As a kid I’d often be subjected to it as my folks drove us to the airport on the northside. The best (worst) way to describe it would be chemically processed farts-even now I am getting a flashback, shudder…
You were not alone.
(According to some guy named “Don” who later broke down in a sales pitch to Hershey Chocolate and was never heard from again.)
Stranger
Reminds me of the “Mike & Ike split” stunt.
You mean, is it Maxwell smart?
Nice!
That’s the second-funniest thing I’ve ever heard.
mmm
Maxwell Igloo
Maxwell Condo
Maxwell Hut
Maxwell Cardboard Box. You buy it in bulk and you can use the container to sleep in. The old coffee filters make fine insulation for those cold winter nights!
I guess it’s fine as a temporary marketing scheme. People are talking about it after all.
Yeah, there’ve been a lot of resurrected zombie threads lately. I clicked, fully expecting the OP to have been posted on some past April 1.
A high caffeine version.
Maxwell’s Hammer.
