I was reading this Cafe threadabout a 1971 movie where a male teacher (Rock Hudson) is seducing and sleeping with (assumedly past age of consent in the movie) 16-18 year old students. Teachers that do this these days are seen as the height of perversity, and yet in the movie it’s described as something that might be frowned on or a cause for firing, but not a criminal act.
When specifically did teachers sleeping with age of consent students become nazi-terror-abuser- baby rapists as they are regarded today?
Bill Clinton was not out of line in having an affair with Monica Lewinsky due to her being too young, but due to her being his intern. (Well, and in the opinion of some people, because of that being married thang & all that).
It’s not always necessarily wrong to have sex with somone below you in the authority foodchain, but it’s dependent on the extent to which that person is vulnerable to repercussions if they decline, or the extent to which a reasonable person in an immediately parallel situation would perceive it as a necessary part of their job (“Oh, so THAT’S what you have to do to get ahead around here”). Thus, the student who reports to several instructors and can choose from among them for academic & administrative needs is not so much in a vulnerable situation than the student who must get a passing grade or a professor’s willingness to sign off on a critical paper from one specific teacher.
I don’t know if Lewinsky is the best example here re power/powerless as (IIRC) she as much as admitted in her conversations with Linda Tripp that she was infatuated with Clinton and was bent on seducing him by any means necessary. This is not to excuse Clinton’s stupidity and recklessness as I doubt he put up all that much of struggle.
Is it actually against the law today? Immoral and cause for losing one’s job, but I hadn’t realized it is actually illegal given that both people are at or older than the age of consent. No one charged Bill Clinton with a crime related to his affair with Monica.
A number of laws have been passed so that teacher-student relationships (even if the kid is past AOC) are subject to criminal penalties for the teacher.
You missed the point. If you look at that article the age of consent in Washington is 16. There is a separate law (or a subsection) that states that when teachers and others in a position of authority are involved they can be charged even if the student is above the age of consent. That case made it clear that the law does not apply after the student reaches 18 and is considered an adult. New Jersey has a similar law.
A lot of people confuse age of consent with becoming an adult. In most states the AOC is lower than 18.
In Canada, age of consent is now 16, but there is an exception making it 18 if the older person is a person in a position of trust or authority such as a teacher, clergy, scout leader, etc.
Once the student turns 18, they can go to town and the state doesn’t have anything to say about it. (The school board is another matter, of course.)
