Unfortunately, this occurred when Hasbro purchased Tonka in 1996. Pretty much all the companies I loved as a kid are now owned by Hasbro - Avalon Hill, Galoob, Milton Bradley, Parker Brothers, Playskool, Tiger Electronics, TSR, Tonka, Kenner - kinda ironic they own Monopoly too, huh?
I always liked Transformers way more, but the Go bots were on tv every morning. Right after the Hanna-Barbara cartoon olympics. Can’t beat the USA cartoon express :). There was always that cheap family member getting me the Go-Bots toy instead ruining my birthday
History sure seems to have turned a cold shoulder on Go-Bots, but I sure liked it back when I was four. Things sure have changed since then. How do you think a character named “Cy-Kill” would go over these days?
When the two toy lines first hit the market, I conducted a simple test to see which one was cooler – I bought one toy from each line and playtested them.
Leader-1 lost my interest after ten seconds.
Hound kept me fascinated for hours.
Not even close.
Also, note that the OP is not the first time that the Transformers toy line has used (mocked) the “Go-bots” name. During the late '80s, for instance, one of the European-only water-squiring Autobots was named “Gobots”. And then there was a line of Hot Wheels-compatible Transformers called Go-bots.
