This article is the second time I’ve seen someone write “the Internets”. It can’t be a simple typo because the next sentence starts with “They are”.
Have I missed something, or is it just another example of sloppy terminology?

It’s just a joke. Actually, it’s not really funny anymore but people keep on doing it so I suppose it’s more of a meme now. I first noticed it being used a lot when George Bush said it in a speech. At the start it was used to make fun of him and then it took on a life of its own.

The Google got so big, it needed its own internet. Now we have two internets.
It’s a joke that has pretty much saturated the internets.
I’m quite partial to “the internet is a series of n00bz” myself.
I never heard anyone say ‘Internets’ until Bush did in the debate.
