Heh, I assumed you were lulling him into a false sense of security whilst amassing your drone army.
I think it’s when, if I see their username as the most recent post, I have to see what s/he said. Kayaker does that for me. If I see a thread with his name at the end I always have to check out what he said.
See, I just did it here.
Is marking someone established a personal thing or is it board-wide?
Ooo! Very true. I just saw Inner Stickler posted and I wandered over to see what he said.
And see, I was curious what you had to say!
Me too, but that can be “established” in a good way or a bad way.
Without a doubt!
Wouldn’t that be “ab” in the singular?
Ahh, now I’m all blushing and stuff…:o
I’d say that the reverse is true, too…
I think there is a distinct difference between “established” and “noticed”.
We have a Charter Member since 1999 who has posted a total of 78 times. I consider her established- her post count is .01 a day.
Then you get people who join, blather on about everything and get noticed. There is a certain relief when they are told they are not the right fit.
No formula.
“He has a six-pack ab.” Yup, that works!
Blathering on is discouraged? Aw, man.
Seriously! Now I’m surprised I’m still here.
:o
I know, right? I mean isn’t this pretty much what we do here?
Your post is very insightful and to the point; and has given me pause for thought. I think that being established is a thing to aspire to, but I don’t think being noticed is something that suits me. For me, spending time posting here is probably just time spent away from more fruitful endeavors. So, in this vain, I think it best I follow the path of the aforementioned Charter Member in your post and adopt the habits of a lurker.
I’ve only been here briefly, but as a last post(for the foreseeable future), and in the vein of this thread I will mention Msmith, Even Sven, Shodan, and Shagnasty as a few of the posters whose thoughts I always look forward to reading, even though we sometimes exchanged barbs in the past.
The “Hi Opel” comment I placed in my list was a joke as I am well aware that it got old well before she passed away. As to Colibri not taking me seriously as an “established” poster it’s really not a big deal to me.
But when I think of established posters the people that come to mind are OpalCat, QTM, GFactor, Shagnastey and JohnnyLA to name just a few out of many more. People who add flavor and knowledge to the board. There are of course other established posters that distract from knowledge and are somewhat distasteful on a regular basis but in the spirit of peace and harmony that is in IMHO I refrain from calling them out.
As I said in post #125, I didn’t say that using “Hi Opal” meant you weren’t an established poster, just that it tends not to be used by posters who have been here longer.
And just to make it clear to others I was in no way dissing you or anyone else when I stated I wouldn’t name my personnel list of established not so cool posters. They know who they are anyway.
Well, saying this as a poster who’s definitely not established here, I think almost everyone that’s posted in this thread is “established” in my mind.
When I look at an established poster’s username, some part of my brain goes “Oh! So-and-so!” Sometimes I won’t even really remember why I remember them, but I do. Establishment is having large amounts of posters recognize your posting name, and probably be able to ascribe a few traits (voted for Obama, lives on the West coast, has two cats, is an agnostic, loves chocolate, has a stepson).
It’s not black and white - there’s a lot of grey area. But it doesn’t have to do with Pittings or post numbers or whatever else. It’s just a sense of other people knowing who you are, for better or for worse.
And you’ve now just become established as someone with a pretty impressive memory!
