When does your workplace get cleaned?

Once upon a time many years ago, I seem to recall that the janitorial crew would come thru outside of normal work hours to empty trash, vacuum, dust, and clean the restrooms. But at most of my workplaces since the mid-90s, much of this seems to get done during the day.

Where I work now, “normal” work hours are 8-5 with an hour for lunch, but some of us start at 6 or earlier, and others work late into the evening since they start later. I’m an early person, so I’ve gotten to know the couple who do trash, vacuuming, and dusting, and they’re usually done by about 7:30, so technically, I guess they’re outside of regular hours.

Still, the restroom cleaner often starts later (I think she does one of the other company facilities first) and that has occasionally sent me running upstairs in distress. We’ve also had to deal with the tile floors being mopped and occasionally buffed in the middle of the work day, and it’s impossible to bypass the wet floors because of the building layout - kinda makes mopping an exercise in futility.

I assume the scheduling is a monetary decision - guessing it costs more to have an evening crew, but I don’t know. And it’s really not a big deal most of the time. But I do wonder how typical my workplace is compared to others. So do tell…

They come through for the garbage cans around this time each morning, although I haven’t seen them yet today. They vacuum and dust once a week also mid/late mornings, and clean the nearest restrooms to me around 10 am (which means I often have to walk over to the ladies’ room on the other corner of the building).

Three night per week, after hours. Mostly to avoid disruption, I assume.

I work at home. So, hardly ever.

Warehouse-type situations. It is constantly being cleaned even during shifts with the scruboni being run maybe three times a day between shifts. One thing I can say for Da Jungle is that they really try to keep the place as clean as possible and with all the dust from the belts and all it isn’t as easy task.

The cubicle farm gets the trash emptied before anyone gets to work. Bathrooms and break rooms are during the day, but our cleaning lady has a set route she follows, so you have a pretty good idea which bathroom isn’t being cleaned. Or better yet, was just cleaned.

The bathroom gets cleaned just when I have to pee the worst.

j/k, it gets cleaned mid-afternoon.

Trash and recycling are emptied after work (6-7 PM) and vaccuuming is done after work (7- later). Friday is skipped but they come in Sunday for a deeper clean.

The cleaning while I’m working doesn’t bother me, except when Richard wants to chat. He’s an older guy and he’ll just go on and on. I try to be really busy when he comes by, and he’ll move on to chat up someone else. His wife, who works with him every other day, will exchange a few pleasantries with me, but it rarely lasts more than a minute.

Really, the biggest hassle is that my trash can is behind me in the farthest corner from the office door. I can’t move it anywhere else because it becomes a trip hazard or it’s out of reach. If I’m not too deeply involved in my work, I’ll pull it out and pass it to them. It doesn’t bother me enough to make me change my hours - I like leaving at 3:30.

At the office, every night around 6PM. At home, once every three years whether it needs it or not.

Usually every evening at about 6:30. The plant lady comes in every Friday afternoon.

I have no idea; I start on Monday.

End of every workday I sweep the shop. I do the restroom weekly.

Our office rents space in an office building. Our office is a 24/7/365 operation.

Bathrooms are by the elevators and shared with other building tenants. They are cleaned M-F about about 6:30pm. No cleaning on holidays.

Our office contracts for our own cleaning separately. Dusting & garbage collection Mon-Sat, about 6am. Vacuuming only on Saturdays.

Classrooms get trashed every day after school. Floors get vacuumed once a week. Faculty restrooms get scrubbed down every day during 6th period.

I work n a building that houses about 1,000 people. Cleaning goes on all day, restrooms are cleaned multiple time during the day. Emptying of trash and vacuuming happens in the evening, starting about 5:30.

Two days a week, two to three hours before we get in for the day.

At our office (an ad agency with about 90 people), we have two cleaning / maintenance people who are there during the work day, taking care of anything that arises while the office is occupied (though they split time between our office, and other offices in the building). The main cleaning person arrives around 4:45pm; she’s the one who empties all of the garbage cans, sweeps, vacuums, etc.; I’ve never been there late enough to see at what time she finishes.

Same here. I do all the cooking, do the dishes, everybody’s laundry and fix everything that needs it. Oh, and pay for every damn thing.

But expect a clean toilet or a swept floor? Maybe pick up your toenails off the floor? Not ever gonna fuckin’ happen.

This is why I drink.

Our bathrooms and the floors get cleaned once a week. Seems to happen in the afternoon although it can vary a bit, and the day varies also. We are each responsible for our own trash, though, and each one of us gets assigned a day to be the designated trash-taker-outer-to-the-Dumpster.

My store has a policy, you can come in up to an hour before your shift begins if you are willing to do your assigned cleaning duties. I put out the plastic bags at each register and crush the empty boxes, an put returned merchandise back to the last four aisles. Other people have other assigned cleaning duties, and the store stays clean.

It’s amazing what people will do to earn extra money.
