I’m a high school student, so I started my vacation this weekend. It’ll last for two glorious weeks – and I have no homework! However, today I was thinking, and I realized I didn’t know what sort of vacations working folk get. Both my parents are self-employed, so they aren’t very good examples.
Where do you work, and what sort of Christmas break do you get?
My employer shuts down for a holiday break. Today the 23rd was a scheduled work day but most of my shop took vacation or leave without pay. 4 days this week and 3 next week are paid holiday and it is back to work on the 2nd. But we do not get another paid holiday till Memorial Day at the end of May.
My employer shuts the entire facility down over Christmas and New Year’s each year, so we’re off from 12/21 (counting the preceding weekend) through (1/1). I made myself a long list of projects to get caught up on during this time.
Major bummer, TVGuy. I think it’s important that everyone remember hardworking folk such as yourselves. Do you get any sort of extra pay for working on holidays, or, say, a vacation later, as a reward?
Hope you have a good holiday, even if you don’t get a vacation.
My dad tells me that a CTV affiliate in Toronto went to someones house and filmed 5 hours worth of burning fireplace…They are going to play it from 5am to 10am, so that families can open their presents in front of a “fire” They gave all of the employees the morning off to be with their families. You might want to suggest that to your employer, TVGuy. It’s a small vacation, at least!
I’m a university student. My last exam this year was the 12th, and winter term classes start the 6th, so I get a good 3 weeks off this year. It was a little less last year.
Right in time, I’ve come down with the Cold From Hell. My vocal output sounds like the hellish offspring of James Earl Jones in a psychotic episode and a very defective coffee machine.
Right now all I want to do is sleep. Until March just might handle it.
Ah, hell, I’ve still got lots of good eats and lazin’ around planned. Goin’ back to work between New Years, then another coupla days carefully orchestrated collapse planned.
We’re closed the 24th and 25th, and the 1st. My birthday is the 31st, so I’m taking a vacation day for that. I’m in publishing, and production schedules roll along 52 weeks a year.
Right now. My employer gives us Christmas Eve and Day off, and I have 3 use-'em-or-lose-'em vacation days left. A week of peace and quiet. (yeah, right!)
