I’m contracting at Game Stop and my wife is between paralegal jobs working at Ross(Dress for less! Evil bastards). Does anyone else share this unfortunate fate?
What job is keeping you at work on Christmas eve?
This is the first time in YEARS I(and especially SO) have been at work on the eve of Xmas. Perhaps I could live vicariously through you non-crap job holders?
Crap job holder checking in. I normally work Saturdays and I’m off Wednesdays. This Wednesday I have a dental appointment, and I work Thursday & Friday to get next Saturday off. Merry Xmas.
You can put me down on the list for 12 hours of protecting and serving the citizens of the greater Chicago southland (and one community in northwest Indiana). Been that way since 1990. Happy and safe holidays!
Blockbuster - closing the 24th, 25th, and 26th. But I don’t celebrate Xmas, so it’s no biggie.
Damn, dentist AND work Xmas eve. I’m starting to feel a little better!
What do you do?
I work in rental property management. I have to be here on Saturday in case someone wants to pay their rent or their toilet overflows or something.
Hey, I just realized this is my most successfully thread SOMEONE ANSWERED!!!
Pathetic huh?! (preparing for silence)
I work at a car dealership. The schedule that came out at the beginning of the year said we were off at 2:00, but the new manager changed it to 6:00. As a receptionist, I’ll be there… I’m not so sure how we’re going to run a dealership without the sales people who will bail, though.
The radio station, a State business, will be officially closed from for a week starting the 24th, but Friday will be a regular business day, as far as I know. The last thing I do will be to engineer the last newscast at 5:44, just like every other day. But that’s OK, because for my wife and me, Christmas is today. We’re driving 200 miles to spend it with her family, as her brother will be on the road on the 25th. So it’s no big deal for us to work on the 24th.
Deli clerk checking in. 10:00am-7:30. Lord save me.
My father is an emergency room doctor, and although he has Christmas Eve off (brother’s birthday), he has to go in at 6:30 am on Christmas day.
I am off Christmas Eve this year but have a regular school day on Saturday, Christmas Day.
(We have a Thursday/Friday weekend here.)
Nurse here. I am splitting Eve and Day (6 hours each instead of one 12 on either Eve or Day)…but the way it works out, I am off for church and family stuff on the Eve and home for the stockings on the Day, so I’m happy.
My firefighter husband is working a 24 hour shift on Christmas Eve, then we are driving to his family in Sequim WA about 110 miles away, but 45 of them are water, we’ll be on the ferry for 1/2 hour. I’ll be driving, obviously.
Home health nurse, working Fri/Sat/Sunday, mostly to make some extra dough. Should be 6 hour days, but I imagine the traffic will be a nightmare. That’s the only thing about my job that I dislike :), I actually enjoy spending time with my patients during the holidays. Many of them are alone and don’t even have a phone call to look forward to.
Hey, I just realized I’m working Thursday too! Woo hoo! Since school is out for a few weeks and I won’t be teaching again til mid-Jan., I’m happy to have another job to keep me busy (and away from the after-Christmas buying frenzy).
You don’t normally work at all on Christmas Eve? Not even a half day when it’s during the week? I didn’t realize that was an option for that many people who weren’t high mucky-mucks. Every business I’ve ever dealt with has been open for at least part of the day, except for school systems (and I think even then the central office is open through the week or so of winter break.)
At any rate, be happy that at least neither of you has to work on the day itself. And Ross will be closing early, so your girlfriend will have the evening of Christmas Eve off. That’s not crappy, that’s perfectly normal for millions of Americans, a lot of them with decidedly non-crappy jobs.
No, we don’t have to work either day this year. :does happy dance: Friday is one of my normal nights off, and I worked Thanksgiving this year, so I’m off on Christmas. He got the Christmas block off instead of the New Years one this year, so he’s off from the 24th to the 28th. (Excuse the happy dance–I’m not gloating, it’s just that it’s the first time in three years that the 24th’s not a normal work day for him and neither of us has to work on the 25th. I can’t help being excited.)
Mr Grief and I have been off work since Thursday the 16th and we don’t go back until Jan. 17th. WOOHOO! We both work in a factory and they have some sort of plantwide shutdown every year at this time-the length varies, though-sometimes it’s two weeks, sometimes three, this year-four!. Thank goodness for unemployment!
I’ll be delivering pizza late into the night on Christmas Eve. I don’t really care though, it’ll be my last day of work and I could use the cash. The day after X-mas my friends and I are having our annual week-long vacation in the Keys. When I get back next year I’m moving downtown and starting my higher-wage job. So no, I don’t mind working Christmas Eve at all.
I don’t mind working Christmas Eve if there’s actually a reason for it. But, the factory is closed as of noon on the 23rd. AND most of my customers have the whole day off. The company admits that it’s a stupid day to work, so none of the tech service people, bosses, secretaries, credit people etc. have to work. Just one lowly little customer service person for each department. So, there will be 4 of us there with nothing to do.
Well technically i guess i have to work christmas eve.
I do the overnight shift at Toys R Us, 10pm to 7am. I have to work the night of the 23rd, so I’ll be working til 7am, then sleeping til christmas eve night… then staying up all night cause I won’t be tired.
Weird christmas.
