People who do this aren’t smart enough to realize they do it.

You suppose correctly. There was an instance wherein Scylla (IIRC) changed a word (black, maybe?) to Jew (again, I’m old and trying to remember) in a quote. There was a great frothing flap. I think the word ‘legality’ was tossed around. It’s a GIANT NO NO. So don’t.
