When Romney Wins....

I think the kind of people who get into upper-echelon politics think differently. I’ve seen people on both sides theorizing that not only does the other guy not expect to win, he doesn’t even really want to - and I’m pretty confident they are all wrong.

Yep. I have known all sorts of elected officials. They all complain about the work, the people, and so forth. But none of them wants out if they can help it.

Unlikely. Nixon was the last losing Republican general election candidate to come back and actually not only become the Republican candidate again, but win the election. And there was much rodent-coitus going on in that particular primary and general, as well.

ETA: And, frankly, Sirhan Sirhan probably won that one for Nixon, for what it’s worth.

How do you figure, jay jay?

And I’m with Marley, and FDR, who said “who wouldn’t want to be president?”.

Brilliant way to bring the undecided voters out to vote for Romney .. and just in time for the holiday season!

Bobby Kennedy would have blown Nixon off the map, I think, at least in part by keeping the Dems a bit more together than Humphrey was able to. Of course, that was before my time, so I could be wrong.

The current polling shows Obama ahead, right? So if Romney wins, it will be in contradiction of the polls, and likely a very narrow win. Both of these would probably cause Obama’s concession to be later rather than sooner.

Obama, unlike Romney, is not a douchebag, entitled liar. He will concede when it is clear he’s lost.

Romney, I feel, will be more like Palin, who tried to also give a concession speech in 2008 (something McCain refused, as VP candidates never give their own speech). When Romney loses, I fear he will concede in a snarky, divisive, and childish way that somehow concedes but still tries to mention that he’s right and things would have been better if he was elected.

When Romney wins…

Is he playing church bingo somewhere?

Mormons don’t play bingo. They don’t gamble.

I’ll bet you ten thousand dollars that Mitt does.

That’s a joke, by the way. I don’t gamble.

If Obama concedes and it turns out he actually won, I’m certain that Obama will have to send in troops to keep Mrs Romney from taking over the White House. I could not imagine her reaction if she got THAT close, then lost it.

That’s debatable, but moot; one of the realities obscured by the fact that RFK was shot after what sounds to our modern ears like a triumphant moment (winning the California primary) is that he had no realistic chance of becoming the nominee had he lived. The primaries back then were more “beauty contests” than anything (though this was the last time that was the case, as McGovern got the rules changed to make the system more small-d democratic, then used his new system to get himself nominated in '72). To illustrate, check out the tally of who got how many votes in the primary season that year:

Obviously McCarthy was not the nominee. Humphrey did beat “unpledged”, but only barely. It didn’t matter: it was not primary voters, but party bosses in smoky back rooms, who picked the nominee. And they weren’t going to pick Bobby Kennedy. A surprising number of journalists and even historians seem to think otherwise, but I think that’s really wishful thinking in hindsight.

Why weren’t they going to pick RFK?

When Romney wins… Jobs get shipped overseas.

When Romney wins…pigs will fly…through Hell…wearing ice skates and carrying hockey sticks.

…you were saying?

Go easy on him, he’s a nice guy with an opinion.
