When should I get my next Covid Vaccination?

I didn’t think there’s a “one year” rule, but i think that unless you are high risk, you only qualify for one dose of each year’s vaccine. (In the US.) So you will likely be fine once the new vaccine reaches your pharmacy.

Unless you were very unlucky and caught covid in the past month, your pharmacist did you a favor, because this year’s coming vaccine is a much better match to the strains out there now than last year’s is. (Or than last year’s was when it was released, truth be told.) So it was worth waiting for the new one.

Canada is likely to require 6 months, unless they have different guidelines for the elderly. They’ve recommended longer waiting times than the US since the start of vaccination.

The CDC recommends needing only a 3 month waiting period after a bout of Covid before getting a vaccine booster offered. This same site has all the Covid vaccine recommendations for every conceivable US population group. It was just updated August 23, 2024 so it is the latest (for the US).

6 months is the recommended interval, 3 months is the minimum with informed consent. Given she spends the winter in Florida, there is no way she is heading down there without a booster.

Your post inspired me to re-check CVS’s website, and they now have the Moderna 2024-2025 vaccine. I just booked an appointment for 9:30 tomorrow morning, instead of waiting to get it at the same time as my flu vax. Thanks, Nurse BBB!

So glad it helped! Kudos to you for acting quickly. While I was at my pharmacy getting mine today I was able to talk things through with an 84yo woman there who was in a quandary about also getting the RSV with her flu and Covid vax. The pharmacists couldn’t be bothered to talk her through her questions, but I sure could, as I waited my turn. Once a nurse, always a nurse!

As of last night my pharmacy had only the Pfizer. I wonder if they’ve gotten the Moderna yet. All of my vax have been Pfizer except for one, so Pfizer is fine. Sooner protection is better is my theory.

Here in the Northeast, the wastewater numbers are heading down again. I expect them to shoot up at and after Thanksgiving, and peak at new years, as that’s what’s happened the last three years.

Even if i hadn’t recently had covid, I would probably wait a bit, to have stronger protection over the holiday season. Or maybe not, i have a lot of travel planned in the next two months, and it would be a nuisance to have to cancel.

But i hear that covid levels are extremely high in other parts of the country right now. I have a friend in Indiana who was chomping at the bit to get boosted a week ago.

I’ve been boosted with the updated Moderna vaccine and got a flu shot as well. That was yesterday so now I’m in bed feeling crappy and with a sore shoulder. I laid in some Rao soup so I’m prepared for a day of ick.

I also have travel planned for the next couple of months, so I’m glad I got this out of the way now.

Today! Pincushion city. New Covid, geezer extra strength flu, and RSV. One in each arm just kidding, I don’t have three arms.

Sore a bit at the injection sites, normal. I can feel the T cells, anti-bodies, 5G receptors racing about. I’ve already gained an extra bar reception. Next year, I’m getting the Starlink nanobots!

I’ve got a dual shot scheduled for September 27th. Seasonal flu and Covid to be precise. I’m planning on driving down the week after to visit my folks (630 miles each way, not a fun drive) and want to get it out of the way slightly earlier than usual. And, since I’ll probably feel moderately under the weather for 24-48 hours, it’s scheduled for a Friday. That’ll also put me at basically 3 months near exactly after my wife and I had our first confirmed Covid case.

My wife is dreading a new Covid shot, and is getting her seasonal flu shot at work about a week after. I’ll have to nag her to do the Covid booster before the end of October though.

I have a highish-risk event in mid November, and was planning on getting jabbed 2-3 weeks before that. But I realize I’m scheduled for a lot of travel in October, and wonder if i ought to get my shots sooner, and not wait until the end of October to do them. If that’s my plan, i should schedule it soon.

Yeah, I’m doing COVID tomorrow and probably flu in about 2 weeks. I’d rather wait until later, but I’d also rather not be unvaxxed on a plane.

I’ve got an ice cream sundae scheduled for Saturday. Also COVID, flu and RSV shots at the pharmacy across the street just before. I prefer to anticipate the ice cream.

I got my 2024-25 Moderna covid shot one week ago today. That makes shot #7 for me. I was pretty fatigued for about 24 hours afterwards but it was well worth it to me to decrease my chances of ever getting long Covid.

I went with the Moderna because it (along with the Pfizer) targets a more recent variant (KP.2) than the variant targeted by the Novavax vaccine (JN.1). And the Moderna vaccine has a larger dose than the Pfizer.

So to date I’ve been vaccinated against the following variants:

  • Original strain (2 initial & 2 boosters)
  • Original strain + Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 (Fall 2022)
  • Variant XBB.1.5 (Fall 2023)
  • Variant KP.2 (Fall 2024)

There’s a family tree in this link if anyone is curious:

I unfortunately caught covid about 2 - 3 weeks ago. My doctor recommends waiting three months to get the shot and I am fine with that although I had wanted to get it before going out of the country at the end of September.

Plans always go awry.

Apparently I will have some immunity for several months.

Will get the flu shot when I return.

I have more than the average number of arms.

Follow-up on my shots yesterday, Covid, geezer size flu dose, RSV. One in each arm (just kidding, I have only two arms). I was tired in the afternoon so I took a nap (Steeeve! You take a nap every afternoon - actually depends on the density of grandkids around). Just in case, I also took a double dose of horse dewormer, stole some Lupis medication, used up the last of my aquarium cleaner, shoved a UV tube up my ass, and drank a glass of bleach. Just kidding on the bleach, I just dab some on my earlobes three times a day - I’m not craaazzzy!

Should be good until next year.

The initial vaccine might have been slightly better at inducing immunity than the disease was, against the original strain of the disease. Covid has evolved a lot since then. It was under enormous evolutionary pressure to escape exactly that immunity, and infection probably provides a stronger immunity booster today. Your prior vaccines helped you fight off this bout of covid, and your immune system has learned something new in the process.

I think your immunity from having recently recovered from covid is likely better than what you’d get if you’d gotten the vaccine instead. Go enjoy your vacation. And take advantage of another booster 3-6 months after your recovery.

Thank you. That was a helpful summary.

I’m doing better except for some residual loss of taste and smell. It was totally gone for about a week or so but has gradually improved to where it is about 80% better.

Just got ours. Now moving our arms around and popping an Advil.
