When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's revolting...

And here I was thinking only the Americans could come out with something like this, but behold, the great Aussie Meat Pie Pizza from Dominos. (Apologies if this should be in Cafe Society).

There’s also a pizza with chicken and apricot sauce, and another one with eggs. Blegh. Just…blegh.

Looks kinda scrumptious to me. Except for the peas. Peas?! Ew.

Yep. Makes me wanna puke everytime I see the commercial. It looks (and probably tastes) vile.

In the interests of science, I think you should try it. I would, but I’m vegetarian, so it’s all up to you!

Excellent suggestion. I’d try it, of course, but I’m very very far away. ::wipes forehead in relief::

My understanding is that the “meat” in “meat pie” is a bit of a misnomer and that it’s quite likely not meat at all, so I don’t see what’s holding you back from trying it!

Pfft! By law, your Aussie meat pie must have 25% meat in it! Why cavil at 75% sawdust and unknown matter??

And I thought I was weird for liking pineapple on mine…

In unrelated news, I’d just like to thank Girl from Mars for giving me a bad case of earworm.

GT

Seems fair enough since you aren’t going to try the pizza.

Try the priest!

It looks like it’s got cold cuts on it! Wait, maybe I’d better not post that-don’t want to give them any ideas!

We have some fairly odd things on Canadian pizzas.

Pizza Pizza, probably the biggest pizza chain in Ontario, has over the last few years, offered some, um … unique toppings:

  • Tikka masala sauce (great with chicken, but on a pizza?)
  • Broccoli
  • Diced mango

Other strange toppings from other pizza joints around here include:

  • Roasted potatoes
  • Shrimp (seafood on pizza is evil. I blame anchovies for this.)
  • Tuna (see above)
  • Teriyaki sauce
  • Alfredo sauce (or similar garlicky white sauce)

Some that sound weird are actually awesome. One local place has a great Sicilian pizza with roasted eggplant and zucchini. I also love Greek pizzas with kalamata olives and feta cheese.

What’s wrong with peas? I agree they don’t really go on a pizza, but neither does a meat pie. However, “pie ‘n’ peas” is a classic. Meat pies are normally eaten in the hand, but if you have one on a plate, it’s great to have mushy peas slopped all over it. Just ask anybody who has been to the famous Harry’s Cafe de Wheels in Sydney.

Of course, you might baulk at what the South Australians do: they have a thing called a “pie floater”. This is either a delicacy or puke material, depending on whom you talk to. It’s a bowl of pea soup with a meat pie floating in it. I actually quite like the things (great in winter), but I suspect those pesky South Australians only invented them to laugh at interstaters’ attempts at eating them. It’s an unusual culinary experience trying to chase a pie around a bowl of soup.

I confess to liking white sauce or alfredo sauce on pizza - I’m not a big fan of cooked tomatoes. But peas? On pizza? I like peas…but…

Mmm, Aussie meat pies. Got introduced to them one one of my visits. Not terribly appetizing to look at, but when squirted full of ketchup (sorry, “tomato sauce” to use the local name for it) and washed down with a cold beer, they’re surprisingly tasty.

I don’t know about turning them into pizza, though the meat pie itself isn’t bad. But the beetroot on the hamburgers? That’s just not right somehow…

Minced beef includes lips and arseholes. Given this is made by Dominos I’d go with mostly arseholes. Their pizzas taste like crap anyway.

There is little to absolutely no chance that I would ever try this abomination.

White pizza is yummy. But those things at the Dominos website are NOT pizza. I don’t know what they are, but they’re not pizza.

If you like white pizza, you should try Lean Cuisine’s brick oven pizzas-roasted garlic chicken and gourmet mushroom. And then there’s the deep dish spinach and mushroom.

They’re soooooo good. I usually take Lean Cuisines to work, because they’re so convenient, and the garlic chicken one is my favorite.
