I’m afraid I have some rather distressing news for you.
Liberals will forgive any atrocities just as long as you are presidential enough.
I also see that happening but only if Trump dies after he leaves office. However, if Trump kicks it while he’s still president, look out. Even if he drops dead of a heart attack while cursing out a CNN reporter during a live presidential press conference, there’ll be such a hue and cry of “assassination” and “conspiracy” among his supporters that it will make the speculation surrounding the JFK assassination seem like a quickly forgotten rumor briefly brought up during a Georgetown cocktail party in 1964.
We will?
I do wonder what will happen to his bloated orange body. I know that a lot of the Nazi bigwigs were cremated and the ashes dumped in a still-undisclosed location, to prevent vandalism AND worship, and wonder if the same might happen to him.
Oh, really? On what planet?
This is the whole basis of so-called ‘Conservative’ corruption. They accuse Liberals of doing what they’re doing, and then excuse what they’re doing because ‘The other side does it!’
This happened because the Nazis were defeated. In the present U.S. the Nazis have won.
We’re seeing historical revisionism now with Bush, and it will likely happen with Trump too. Most of you did not like or respect Bush while he was alive and had political power, just as most of you hated McCain when he ran against Obama. Once they no longer held power or posed a threat, it was okay to admit they weren’t so bad after all.
The same will almost certainly happen with the Clintons. While he’s alive, it’s fine to point out that there is more evidence that Bill Clinton is a sexual predator than there was that Brett Kavanaugh is. After Clinton goes, since he wouldn’t be able to defend himself, most of us will probably focus on things like how he had amazing political instincts and charm or whatever.
Nothing wrong with that. That’s the classy way to respond to a death - regardless of how you feel about the person, once they’re dead, they can no longer give their side of things, and even if they were a bad person, there is nothing that can be done about it at that point, so it just seems petty and small to bash the dead.
I have an aunt who died a while back. She really wasn’t a very nice person in many ways and I didn’t really find it all that sad when she died. However, I certainly didn’t express any of that publicly. Instead, I focused on sharing the GOOD things I did remember about her with her family. Even awful people often have done at least some good things at some point. Even jerks still often have loved ones who are hurting when they die.
They’re TRYING to, so far. They’re not winning, not yet anyway, and it’s our job to make sure they don’t.
Usually, when a person isn’t well-liked, people don’t say anything.
There was recently a situation in my area where a tween died, probably from suicide. Usually, when a child or even a young adult dies, the message boards accompanying their obituary are dozens of pages long, but in this case, there were maybe 5 messages, and all of them were addressed to her parents - none to her sibling, which was also puzzling. If the public needs to know (like, for instance, these kids were known to be extremely troubled, or it turns out he killed her) we will find out eventually.
OP here.
Some really great responses. Thanks.
One thing that jumped out at me was when someone asked if Trump is capable of realizing how disliked he is by large swaths of people. It is an interesting question. Do you think Trump in his innermost self feels that he is truly a victim and is as great as he publicly claims? I have this suspicion that especially now that Bush has died he is really thinking, “No one will ever say these nice things about me!” I feel he can’t purport to have acted with the dignity and humor that people say Bush did. He must know that, for example, he could never go on SNL like Bush did and make fun of himself. He must know how unnaturally he comes off. It must be hard for him to see how fake he appears, especially when confronted by someone like Bush who by all accounts seemed genuinely “human.” I also feel that Trump is delusional, but his schtick is getting old, even for him. Is there anything he can do to improve his own reputation at this point? Regarding this delusion, I sense a bit of self-awareness coming in as he realizes he won’t ever get what he wants and things are going downhill fast.
IMHO the whole romanticizing of past Republican presidents by the media could have only occurred BECAUSE OF Trump. It is in their best interest to get old gaurd Republicans back because he delights in tearing the press down. That can’t be.
Even if Agent Orange knows most people loathe him and always have, it wouldn’t matter, because he also knows that there are people who worship him, and that’s all that matters to him.
There will a New Yorker “caption this cartoon” contest over Trump’s mortal coil slithering away. One or two good memes should come out of this.
“Mr. President, something is wrong? You look… more pale.”
“I feel great disturbance in dark side of Force.”
My take: He thinks “Damn this thing with always having to be a f*&^%$ hypocrite when people die.”
We’ll all remember Trump fondly - once Alex Jones is elected President.
He thought the whole weird handshake thing was an accepted fun little game between manly men. It took quite some time and the pressure of international mockery to convince him otherwise. In fact, it should be remembered as one of Justin Trudeau’s greatest diplomatic victories.
He still doesn’t get that he’s been thoroughly played by Putin et al. He honestly believes that he’s going to come out of the Presidency with a huge cadre of billionaires feeling they owe him easy profits and that they will pay him any way they can. He doesn’t get that they are already distancing themselves, and his businesses have all the appeal of real estate in Chernobyl.
Donald Trump has never understood why he is a social pariah. He thought shoehorning himself into the billionaires club would get him some real estate on Martha’s Vineyard. But every house suddenly went under contract every time that he entered a bid. I’ve always thought that his primary reason for running for president was to get the invitations and connections that have been denied to him in the past.
He will be completely shocked to find that it has not worked. He will never connect this to his own behavior, but will blame it on the “unfair” Russia Probe, and everyone believing the “Fake news.” He doesn’t know that he’s just a rich thug, who will never be wealthy. He hasn’t the empathy, or even the theory of mind to figure it out.
He will die believing that he is a genius, because only idiots can tolerate him, so he’s always the smartest guy in the room.
We’ll all remember Trump fondly - once [Mike Pence] is ̶e̶l̶e̶c̶t̶e̶d̶
President.

As for the OP, I think his funeral would be sparsely attended. His family will spin it as an elegant and exclusive private event, and request that the press respect their privacy. Past Presidents and First Ladies will offer their condolences to this wives, children, and grandchildren. Foreign diplomats will “note the passing of a figure who loomed large in American political circles” and send an intern or two to “represent” them.
And the ragged remains of the GOP will devote themselves to petitioning local governments to name bridges and airports after him.
