Are there no women anymore who sing and/or produce hard rock anymore? Or are they all in hiding? (I’m not talking about no-talent whores like Alanis Morrissette, whose caterwhaulings don’t even qualify as “music” in my book). I know the mass media is quite misogynistic, but listening to the local rock station the only female voice ever heard on the airwaves is someone doing a duet with Ozzie back in the 80’s- “If I Close My Eyes Forever” (great song, by the way).
Kidney Thieves, Evanescence, Unfinished Thought, on a scale from hardest to softest.
kidneythieves.com, evanescence.com, unfinishedthought.com. All of them have free MP3s you can download to check them out.
They’re still out there, I’m sure. You probably won’t hear them on most radio stations though.
Check out The Donnas. They’re an all female band with a pop/punk/hard rock sound that harkens back to the 80s.
The 80s singer you hear in a duet with Ozzy is Lita Ford, BTW.
You need to check out Drain STH. Four hot Scandinavian chicks and they ROCK. I saw em open for Sabbath.
Have you checked out Sleater-Kinney?
Check out The Lunachicks. Good old-fashioned punk rock band, nothing fancy, just good rocking tunes. They’d wipe the floor with the Donnas if the two groups ever went head to head.
I second Sleater-Kinney. Terrific band.
Sheryl Crow has most of the field to herself. Sure wish Shannon Curfman would come out with another album.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (“date with the night” is the first single) are starting to get some air-play on the stations I listen to that play The Donnas and Evanescence- which is three more hard sounding female groups than they played last year- so I hope it’s a trend. I miss when Garbage and Veruca Salt were on the radio all the time…
Garbage, No Doubt, Kittie, and the ones already mentioned.
I second (or third, whatever) Sleater-Kinney.
Rainer Maria too.
I was recently burning some mix cd’s for myself and it struck me how many bands with female singers I’m into now, so a ton of band names popped into my head until I realized you specified hard rock. It seems that most of the girls stopped rocking and took over Emo and Lo-Fi instead.
Exene from X has a cool new band called Original Sinners, The Detroit Cobras are a pop/punk who have a 60s girl group thing going on, The Bellrays are a Detroit Style Rock and Roll band with an awesome singer who sounds like Aretha Franklin fronting the MC5. There always have been lots of women in the punk scene since the beginning. They just never get mentioned in VH1s “Women In Rock” episodes.
The Lunachicks would definatly kick The Donnas asses, but I bet the singer would get a few good ones in. Wendy O. woulda crushed 'em all under her boot though!
Joan Jett’s still alive and well too, and rumor has it that there might be a RUNAWAYS reunion! Cherie Currie is still one of the hottest rock chicks ever!

I third Sleater-Kinney. Their new album, One Beat, is absolutely superb.
There’s also The New Pornographers, who seem to alternate between a female and a male lead vocalist.
What, no mention of PJ Harvey?
Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea
I’ve been lucky enough to see Ms Polly Jean perform live a few times. She rocks.
There’s always Sarah MacLeod of The Superjesus. The only problem with her is the guy she started the band with left and with each album they get poppier. Still, thier first album, Sumo, is pretty good.
i was ready to freak until i saw this
PJ Blows them all away
and Tori may not be “rawk” but she rawks anyway
Evanescence had one ok song…the album is rubbish…welcome to that dreaded illness Sophie B. Hawkinsitis…
Drain STH…again one good song
The Donnas, Sahara Hotnight et all…riding the coatails of the unfortunate garage-punk revival…sucked the first time even worse now
Garbage…wow another song with Shirley half-naked and “sexy” with lyrics about he-shes…fucking sad…i hate this band so much…have aged really badly
Kittie do kick ass but they grow redundant quickly
Tori rawks? Compared to Sarah McLachlan maybe… gak
Here’s a good start:Hard rocking girl groups?
[sub]Garbage has a song about hermaphrodites?[/sub]
The few songs I’ve heard from the New Pornographers are fantastic. They seem to be a Canadian rock super-group, with members of many different Canadian bands all teamed up. The female singer is Neko Case, a gorgeous girl singer better known in the alternative-country subgenre. She can channel the sweet voice of Patsy Cline for a torch song one moment, and rock out with the New Pornographers the next.
And did I mention she’s a knockout?
Several of those mentioned (Garbage, Evanescence [album=great ], PJ Harvey) came to mind, as well as the Cranberries.
Almost. The song’s called “Androgyny”, from Garbage’s last studio album.
I don’t know how hard you want your female rocker (wow, that really doesn’t sound right) but Pat Benetar (love her! Just bought all her old records) is coming out with a new CD. It should be out this month!
