Hard rocking girl groups?

I’m looking for recommendations for some hard rock female bands (or even just a female lead). I’m not really talking about pop-rock acts like No Doubt or Garbage. I’m thinking more along the lines of Liz Phair, The Donnas, or L7. Does anyone have any favorites?

Hole? Elastica? The Breeders? Curve? Lush? Catatonia? Sleeper? Echobelly? Salad? Few old ones in that lot.

The Distillers.

Sleater-Kinney
Cub
Team Dresch

My favorite genre of music. I can personally vouch for:

Le Tigre
Snake River Conspiracy (although from what I hear they’ve mellowed too much with their second album.)
Brassy
Betty Blowtorch
Bif Naked
Sahara Hotnights
Skunk Anansie
Tracy Bonham

Lead female vocals? Guano Apes?

I believe Kittie is a girl group. I don’t really know their music, though.

I recommend the first album by the sadly-defunct Sunderland punk-pop queens Kenickie

I second the Sleater-Kinney endorsement. Good stuff, plenty of it on Kazaa (including a nice cover of “Fortunate Son”).

Is Seven Year Bitch still around?

Kittie is pretty cool. They’re like a girl version of Korn.

You can’t go wrong with the original riot grrls…

The Runaways

or just Joan Jett.

And local favoriate Mary Prankster, smart funny cow-punk from the diva of Dundalk.

The lead singer of The Brain Surgeons, Deborah Frost, is a very talented rock music critic and singer. Her husband, Al Bouchard, was the drummer for Blue Oyster Cult as well as the drummer (and occasional lead singer) of the Brain Surgeons. Google their name and you’re sure to find their website, I also believe they’ve got some MP3s at www.mp3.com.

Deborah kicks some serious ass… and with some serious talent behind her (including Tommy Hilfiger’s brother) it’s a fantastic show. “Trepanation” would be a recommended album… the song “Sally” takes on a whole new meaning with a woman on lead vocals

bands I’ve heard and liked:

Tsunami Bomb (catchy upbeat punk)
Tilt (see above)
The Distillers (punk from Tim Armstrong’s wife!)

bands I’ve heard of but not actually heard:

Pretty Girls Make Graves (hardcore/metal)
Walls of Jericho (hardcore/metal)
Dance Hall Crashers (ska-punk stuff)
The Start (punk)
X (punk)

Discount
Tsunami Bomb

Aaagh! Simulpost!

Discount’s singer is now half of a new garage-rock band called The Kills, as well, but I’ve never heard anything by the latter.

Bellatrix are a bit on the poppy side but perhaps worth a listen.

Babes in Toyland

And dont’ forget their successors, Girlschool.

Thanks, everyone.
I’m familiar with several of these, but I’ve got a lot of listening to do.

Good band, but I don’t know if hard-rocking is the image I get. The harmonies are a bit too lush for that.

Kittie are good.
Distillers have grown on me.
But above all i have to say,

DEFENESTRATION

They absolutely rock. Their vocalist, Gen, goes from sweet, melodic vocals, to demonic growl. They are great. Their album is called “One Inch God”. Listen. Enjoy.

Well, i hope, anyway.
