My favorite is Jack Off Jill. They rock hard but still sound feminine (in an evil psychotic bitch kind of way).
I’d recommend Queen Adreena - fronted by the ex-lead of Daisy Chainsaw (also a good suggestion if you can find their stuff). Sort of Gothic-styled metal.
Shonen Knife’s music has been known to rock on occasion but they might not be what you’re looking for lyrically…
Delving into the mists of time you could give Siouxsie and The Banshees a go
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are good but might be a bit indieish for your tastes
WOW…alright…Pretty Girls Make Graves are hardcore/metal?!
Sounds to me like you’ve never even listened to these guys…jesus…what a misnomer…
But yeah…they rock…
My girlfriend, who is a former but still unrepentant punk rocker, heartily endorses this selection.
Well, yes, I’ve never listened to them, that’s why I said it in my post. That was my impression, but maybe I’m thinking of a different band. There are so many. :o
Way back in the early 70s, a pioneering band called, charmingly enough Fanny put out a couple of albums of serious-for-the-time kick-butt (pun intended) rock. They got some airplay with a cover of Cream;s “Badge” and a cut called “Charity Ball,” which also served as the title of their second album. According to All Music Guide, the name Fanny “was suggested to producer Richard Perry by no less than ex-Beatle George Harrison; though a relatively innocuous term in the band’s native United States, its more scandalous meaning overseas was only
known to the group much later on.”
Which, of course, makes me wonder just how scandalous the meaning of the word “fanny” is elsewhere. Any hints from non-American Dopers?
The Slits
Another very enthusiastic vote for Le Tigre and Sleater-Kinney. Pick up LT’s newer album, Feminist Sweepstakes. It’s fantastic.
Also, Bikini Kill is the very definition of a hard-rocking girl group, if you don’t mind a few screeches and the occasional bleeding eardrum. The lead singer of this band is who went on to become the creative force behind Le Tigre.
I enjoy Bratmobile alot; they’re in the same vein as the other two, though not as good. If you like **Liz Phair, ** you would probably enjoy PJ Harvey’s stuff.
Veruca Salt, though I’m not sure if they’re still around.
I cannot believe nobody has mentioned The Raincoats.
Well, I’ll vouch for Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, and Le Tiger.
Sleater-Kinney is one of my all-time favs. “Call the Doctor” is their classic album, according to die-hards, but their newest release “One Beat” is a bit slicker, but musically more mature than “Doctor.” If you want recommendation for singles to check out, “You’re No Rock and Roll Fun” is probably their poppiest, cheekiest track, with a good dose of rock. I personally would suggest picking up “One Beat.”
Unless my eyes have betrayed me, no one’s mentioned Drain STH yet.
For short-skirted, leg-up-on-the-amp hard rockin, you can’t go past Sydney band Skulker. Try their semi-radio hit Hej, or maybe Newport Nightmare. These girls are heavy.
Crisis
Hammerbox
are/were both female fronted. Good hard rock and metal.
from the 1980s:
Bush Tetras
ESG
And The 5.6.7.8’s are rockin’ too!
Huggy Bear
Clare Quilty, although their stuff can be hard to find. Republica’s first album was pretty good.
Jane Wiedlin
Tiger Trap
Supreme Beings of Leisure
The Pretenders’ first album would fit the bill, IMHO.
