Where are the Good Wii Games?

You can stop that “Wii apologist” stuff right now. I genuinely like my Wii. I think it has plenty of great games. And I’m not sure Metacritic are the best way to measure Wii games as many reviewers have commented that they don’t what to make of the Wii. The Penny Arcade guys say the same thing in their E3 news post.

This generation is proving that the definition of “great game” is actually a very flexible thing.

Mostly playing the Grand Prix trying to get a one star ranking on every class in every class. It’s tough and it’s perfect for the 30 minutes of bite-sized gaming I get to play lately. I’m also trying to unlock all the expert staff ghosts in the Time Trial mode.

Also, playing with my Terminator Mii is just fun.

For what it’s worth, I didn’t even unlock everything in Mario Kart before I moved on. I’ve spent more time on Lego Star Wars, to be honest. (That game is wasted on the 360 and PS3, if you ask me; it’s not something that can necessarily be improved by HD graphics and it’s hardly taxing computationally. It’s a perfect example of a fun Wii game, though. A game doesn’t need complexity to be fun IMO.) I’ll probably come back to it at some point, but I have a lot of options as far as gaming goes and I’ve been spending more time with my MMOs than the consoles lately.

I agree. That was something I meant to include in my post that I forgot due to distractions. But it’s a handy quantitative measure, and the disparity in percentages is certainly striking.

I guess there are some things I still need to unlock on MK. Maybe I’ll dust it off this weekend.

I really want to play one of the Lego games. Of the ones that are out now, is Star Wars: The Original Trilogy or Indiana Jones better? I’m a fan of both movie franchises.

You can get the Star Wars complete set now. That’s what I have.

 runs around in circles gleefully

Now I’m glad I didn’t get it for PC; I would like this game so much better on our Wii.

:dubious:

I don’t have time to look it up right now but I’m 98% positive that YOU have used Metacritic several times in the past to show how GOOD Wii games were.

I believe you like your Wii, but I also believe you can’t stand to think that there are good, valid reasons for others to NOT like the Wii other than “you’re just not the market for the Wii”.

What other reason would there be for disliking ALL of the Wii’s best games? These discussions always devolve down to the premise that if SOME Wii games suck, then ALL Wii games suck. And that everyone who thinks otherwise must be deluded (or an “apologist”).

And I don’t think I’ve ever used Metacritic scores in relation to the Wii, but I could be wrong.

The proper statement is that MOST Wii games suck. The VAST majority. Moreso than ANY other console.

I don’t dislike all the Wiis best games. I do like SMG and MP3 seemed good, just not my style. Zelda was a good game, though not my style. I do think that all of those games though would have been BETTER on the other 2 consoles. Only Wii Sports is better on the Wii. Everything else would have been better on the 360 or PS3.

I don’t like feeling like I’m attacking you when these Wii discussions come up because I think you are likeable and a nice poster. I hope you don’t think these are personal attacks, they are just attacks on your personal view of this singular subject.

I never think these are personal attacks coming from any of the regular posters around The Game Room. The last guy that implied I was an idiot for liking the Wii was banned a long time ago (for some other reason I’m sure).

I just can’t wrap my head around the idea that the Wii (as a console) being a failure because it has a lot of shovelware.

Anyone excited for the Conduit? I’m keeping the faith in the wii now that the motion plus attachment has been announced. 1:1 has some good possibilities. The new star wars games look good. I heard good things about some soccer game too, the hook seemed to be you draw the routes of the players. I always thought mouse driven games like realtime strategy games would work well on the Wii. Just grab your units and command them. Same thing with RPGs. Menu systems work easily on the Wii.

As for the titles, I think they are weaker, but who is to blame? Nintendo seems to put out great games all the time. I don’t think people should be throwing the blame at them. They may have had a weak E3, but let there be no doubt that another Zelda and Mario is in the works. Those franchises are too popular to simply ignore. Third party developers seem to have some sort of spite against Nintendo. I personally blame them. If you think about it the Wii controller setup has about 12 buttons if you include the motion inputs, and dual analog sticks if you include the pointer functionality. The controller seems to have plenty of ability.

I’m somewhere between a hardcore and casual gamer. I don’t have the time for hardcore games even though i would like to play them. I have the skills for it, but not the time.
I am dissapointed in my Wii somewhat, but there is no way I am going to invest in another system. 250$ is the max I would ever pay for one.

I’ve never said the Wii is a failure ( I dont remember ever saying that at least) I just think it’s a disappointment. A BIG one.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. The Wii passed the Xbox 360 is total sales today.

The developers will come, it’s impossible for them not to now.

I don’t know, I guess to me that’s just like saying six of one and half a dozen of another.

That sounds really cool.

I was never a Nintendo player so the old games, etc., really hold no interest for me. I bought the Wii mostly because it gets me off my ass, which I desperately need. Got the Fit, Play, Resident Evil 4, and will probably be grabbing the Lego games and Sam & Max ASAP. I don’t whip through console games that quickly so I’m fine with my choice.

I think there’s an awful lot of merit to the idea that in spite of great sales, the Wii users generally are more casual/non-gamers than the 360 or PS3.

It’s anecdotal, but the people I know who play the Wii are my wife, whose video game experience amounts to Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo at her friend’s house in college, another couple who I know, who probably thought the Wii was cool due to the different control system, and my niece and nephew, who are 4 and 6, respectively.

The “real” gamers I know may have Wiis, but only as a 2nd or 3rd console after they already had PS3s and/or Xbox 360s.

My in-laws gave us the Wii for Christmas last year, and I desperately tried to convince my wife that we should sell it and get an Xbox or PS3 with the proceeds, but she thought it was cool, so we ended up keeping it, much to my dismay. I don’t play it, because generally, DDR and Wii Sports aren’t my thing. Half of the fun of video games was being able to play/do stuff that you can’t really do physically, and it sucks to more or less have to play tennis to play the game. If I wanted to do that, I’d just go play tennis, dammit!

Well, to be fair, there is a distinction. I think when people talk about success/failure, they mean financially, and it’s utterly impossible to even begin to coherently argue that the Wii is a financial failure. When Cubsfan talks about it being a disappointment, he’s referring to the enjoyment factor. Something can certainly be a blockbuster success yet not live up to the hype.

I think it’s a losing proposition to argue that the Wii is objectively a disappointment by trying to compare its library to the other systems, though. It may not be the console for you, and that’s fine, but if someone else is utterly satisfied with the Wii and its library, who’s to say that it’s failing to deliver for them? Personal enjoyment is just that, and I don’t think it’s wise to extrapolate personal feelings to the console as a whole.

ETA: This is replying to Justin’s post 73. The above two posts snuck in before I hit Submit.

Just adding - my husband and I used to be hardcore console gamers from Atari 2600 days up through the PS2, but over time computer gaming has taken up more of our interests. Now that we’re mostly World of Warcraft players (with frequent breaks for me), we’re glad to have a more “lighthearted” gaming system in the house. It’s more of our “beer and pretzels” type of gaming - low responsibility/dedication, lots of fun.

Why do you say that? Those two franchises typically do not have same-generation sequels, with the few exceptions of SMB3, Adventure of Link, and Majora’s Mask (I don’t count SMB2 or SMW2 because they are not true sequels.)

Uhhgg. I played Everquest for awhile. Never again will I touch a game that can be discussed using the word responsibility.

You lucky bastard!

Mostly because Zelda was released so early in the system’s lifespan that it only makes sense to make another one. I know I’ve heard before that Nintendo always begins creating another Mario / Zelda game upon completion of the previous game. I think IGN has something on their page that nintendo has dropped hints of another game as well. My point is that Nintendo still has room for the hardcore fan. I’m sure Retro studios is making something interesting as well.

And technically, Wind Waker and Twilght were released for the gamecube. I don’t follow DS too much but I thought there were multiple zelda games on that system as well.

Is Disaster Day of Crisis still being made? Is it in production hell?
