Where are women's masseters?

Masseter = jaw muscle.

If a man is lean enough, you can usually see the outline of masseter in his face, such as in this picture:

However, in some women, you can see just some sort of a ridge between their cheekbone and jawbone, such as in this picture:

I understand that a man’s musculature is bulkier, but I am still confused that you cannot see the smallest trace of a muscle running between the cheekbone and jawbone in women. Can someone enlighten me what is going on? As a man I can easily feel mine when I bite and I can find the edge exactly where the anatomical picture shows it. Could some ladies do a test and try to find their masseters? Bite down and put your hand where it is supposed to be and tell me if you can feel it flexing there.

Women, even very slender women, have a higher body fat percentage than men. Our jaws are also smaller and more gracile. So the muscle is certainly there, but you’re not going to see it unless you’re looking at a famine victim. The masseter can be made out in this picture of a woman with anorexia. I think you pretty much have to get down to that level of starvation before it becomes apparent.

For a less shocking image of a woman with prominent masseters, there’s Olivia Wilde.

It only takes one woman with boss masseters and a Terminator 2 to save the planet.
