Surimi is usually crab-flavored. However, years ago, I was at a trade show. After the show closed, the sponsors had a buffet lunch for the exhibitors…along with this was a tray of fake lobster (surimi). This stuff was amazing-it looked and tasted like Maine lobster! I have never seen the product in supermarkets here…anybody know where you can get this stuff?
Hell, in my world Good Lobster Surimi is an oxymoron. I’ll eat the crab surimi reluctantly, but I’ve never had any that was remotely as good as the real thing. I was in Belgium and they had some surimi that was so realistic, I thought it was actually shrimp. Boy was I mistaken. I like kamaboko, but it ain’t pretending to be anything but brightly colored highly processed fish molecules.
Once in a while I find Lobster Surimi at Sam´s Club that tastes amazingly like the real thing. Probably it isn’t worth coming to Oaxaca just to visit Sam’s, and anyway they are usually out of the stuff.
Hey you can buy some here. Unfortunately, the minimum order is 22 tons, so if it turns out to taste shitty, you’re in for a lot of bad meals.
A friend of mine used to work at Trans-Ocean Seafood. I tasted the lobster once.
I’m not a fan of surimi, but Trans Ocean is pretty good.
