Where can I find an LCD screen for my camera?

I have a great camera but my LCD screen is cracked. It seems to me that someone should sell these things online but I have looked for hours and found nothing. It’s an HP R818 camera. The manufacturer does not sell parts and neither no any repair shops that I can find.
Where does one go to get LCD screens for cameras?

You don’t, generally. You can buy LCD screens for electronics hobby projects, but these are generic and will not work in a piece of consumer electronics. These days the screen in a digicam is almost integrated with the rest of the electronics package and the connections are made with a thin-film ribbon cable that is glued or thermally bonded to the contacts of the actual LCD and to the matching contacts on the main logic board by special equipment. There’s just no way for a DIYer to replace it; even I wouldn’t be able to in most cases.

Have you contacted hp to see if they offer a repair/refurbish service for less than the cost of a replacement camera?

You can often find broken electronics such as phones, PSPs, and cameras on Ebay for replacement purposes.
This would mean typically fixing it yourself, and the LCD display is often the reason for their breaking in the first place, but I’d look there anyhow.

A recent computer magazine (don’t remember the name) gave step by step instructions on how to replace an LCD screen. The instructions didn’t look to difficult but the hard part will be finding a replacement screen. It makes sense to me that any screen of the same size will do but everyone else has said otherwise.

Just in case anyone’s wondering, dear old dad pointed out to me yesterday that his Canon PowerShot A70’s LCD has been malfunctioning (no display). Mine started doing the same about a year ago, but I’m lazy and don’t take many pictures. At any rate, Canon is aware of the problem and offering free repair. Check out their website. This also applies to several other Canon models.

They are usually custom parts. While the size may be the same, or similar, they are not interchangeable.

I believe the only models affected by the LCD cracking problem were the SD200, 300, 400, and 500, not any of the A-series cameras. It’s not mentioned on the customer support page for the A70 either.

Nope. It affects several others, as well:

-Camcorders: ZR60, ZR65 MC, ZR70 MC, ZR80, ZR85, ZR90, ELURA 40 MC, ELURA 50

  • Digital Cameras A60, A70, A75, A300, A310, S230, SD100, SD110, A40(), A80(), A85(), A95(), S1 IS(), S60(), S200(), S330(), S400(), S410(), S500(*)

Now if I could just dig out that A70 that’s been stashed away for the last year and a half. …

I’d suggest contacting HP. I cracked the LCD on my HP R707 about a year ago while it was still under warranty. As expected, since the damage was entirely my fault, I was told that I’d have to pay the repair costs (estimate was around $100-150CDN), but they’d cover the shipping costs. As it turned out, they never billed me for the repair, so my clumsiness was resolved for free. :smiley:

The refurbished camera they sent me as a replacement is a bit more temperamental than my original one was, but I’m really not complaining.

Nope, that’s the CCD issue, a problem with moisture affecting the sensor. It has nothing to do with the LCD (video screen).
