I have an AV320 by the company called Archos. It is a HDD mp3/video player with all kinds of functions. I broke the screen recently, and I have taken it out and I can replace it with a new one.
Now this is the original screen by the OEM. Now I want to know, is there anyway that I could get another screen from a different company, possibly for cheaper? Are they all that expensive? I mean to pay 200 dollars for a screen on a unit that cost me about 450, is ridiculous. Honestly I wanted to sell it, but I won’t make much profit if I have to pay so much for it. Apparently this is the only place that sells them…
Would it be possible to get another one somewhere that fits in this one and would work with my player?
I know nothing about LCD screens, their prices, or if they have special connectors. This one had a ribbon cable that connected under some kind of clasp at the end where the metal strip-like wires were exposed.
Well, I’m not sure how rediculous paying $200 to replace the LCD on a $450 piece of equipment really is. I’m guessing that the LCD originally comprised half of the original manufacturing costs of the device.
From what I’ve found in the laptop market, most LCD’s are designed to work with a controller hardwired into the PC board. I’m sure on a special device like this it’s going to be even more picky about the screen.
And, like laptops, you might be better off finding a second broken unit with a good screen and just robbing the part/s you need.
Um, here’s a thought. I broke the LCD screen on a portable DVD player. There did not appear to be any easy way to remove the LCD and order a replacement. What I did was go to the manufacturers web site found the repair dept. phone number and called the repair department. They told me that the flat rate to repair the thing was $99.50 - no matter what was wrong with it, be it a broken key or a smashed screen. Basically, what the guy said was they take the old one from me and replace it with new unit for $99.50 (a deal, seeing as how buying a replacement off the shelf was $350).
So, I sent them a check for $99.50, the broken DVD player and they sent me a replacement unit. I don’t think is was out of the box new, but it had no visible defects. It may have been another warranty piece that they fixed, I didn’t really care either way.
So, give that a shot first, you might be surprised.
yeah… I suppose my options are to sell it as it is for very little, most likely. I did notice an enthusiast board. Maybe someone there would buy it? Also there is the option of calling the company that makes them for repairs and get a price there.
