Where can I find good quality, downloadable Naval video clips?

No, not videos of bellybuttons.

Here’s the deal. My FIL was in the Navy in the mid-70s. He just found some old 8mm reel to reel tapes that he took when he was on a couple of different destroyers while traveling the world. I have the equipment to transfer from that medium to digital, so I offered to make him a DVD to preserve the videos.

But, even though he gave me two big reels - each made up of 5 or 6 smaller reels, the total converted time is about 25 mins. It seems a bit silly to burn 25 mins of video onto a DVD.

I started looking around the web to just find some Naval footage to fill in another hour or so. Anything would work. Naval battles, Carrier takeoff and landings, firing the big guns, missles, or torpedoes. All I found were some Youtube clips and by the time I downloaded them, the video quality was worse than the 8mm tapes I converted.

So, anyone got suggestions? I’m looking for free here. It’s mostly just for fluff and if it isn’t out there, I’ll just put the 25 mins on and call it good. But, if I could anything else on there it’d be a bonus.

I also thought about throwing together a slide show to make a video. What’s the chances anyone would know where to get good pictures of the USS Leahy or USS Thomaston?

I invoke my right to a single bump. Then, I’ll let this die if there’s really nothing out there.

Some Youtube clips are available in HD. You might try checking that angle.

Great pictures here.
