Where can I get pure capsaicin?

Hi. I have been looking for a vendor who I can buy pure Capsaicin from. I am thinking of designing a self defense product, and I need to order some of this stuff. Thanks for any assistance.

Bear spray is restricted to around 1% capsaicin due to the risks associated with higher levels. I don’t think you want to be going anywhere near the pure stuff.

Oops, apologies, I read your post as “thinking of USING IT AS a self defence…”

lol

Go to this web site:

https://www.sigmaalrich.com

Type capsaicin into the search field, and a voila.

Sigma catalog number M2028, for instance, is about 95% pure, and ought to do fine.

Seriously, now, I’ve actually known some people at the NIH who worked with this compound. It hurts like HELL. Getting stuff this pure on you anywhere is damn uncomfortable, and if you get it in the wrong place, the pain is almost traumatizing. Plus it’s a neurotoxin, so it might cause permanent damage, though I think that is pretty unlikely unless you really smear a lot of it on someplace. That would be kind of insane, unless you’re very masochistic, so probably that’s not an issue.

I think Sigma will let private parties purchase chemicals, so long as it’s not something suspicious, dangerously toxic, or a controlled substance. Since this stuff could be made into a pretty potent weapon (as you intend), I dunno how they would handle capsaicin, but I suppose it’s worth a try.

That should be http://www.sigmaaldrich.com .

Also check out Sigma Aldrich catalog number M 3403 – it is 60% capsaicin but is 25% the price of the 97% pure stuff and 35% the price of the 90% stuff. A gram will set you back $75 though (old prices though). The don’t sell CN or CS though.

Thanks, ENugent!

Thanks guys!

I think that Loopydude may be doing viewers a disservice in under-playing the toxicity of pure caspaicin. It is not merely uncomfortable, pure (i.e. 95%) is fucking dangerous. The material data safety sheet for pure capsaicin recommends the use of a Government approved respirator in addition to goggles, gloves, labcoats, and working in a ventilated fume hood. In case of a spill, clean-up crews must wear rubber gloves, rubber boots and self-contained breathing apparatus before entering the spill area.

So, unless you have the requisite personal protection equipment, the proper handling/storage/disposal facilities, and the proper chemical and safety training, I would strongly urge you not to dick with this stuff. If you feel that you must, I would recommend that you not go for the high purity material but work with the lowest concentrations that will suffice.
