I would kill (well, slightly injure) to get some tapes of the WB show Popular (1999–2001). Brilliant parody of those teen shows—but so badly promoted that most people thought it was “one of those teen shows,” and it only lasted two seasons. Very gay sense of humor, and more out-of-left-field pop-culture references than The Simpsons. One episode I recall had bits from Mommie Dearest, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Yentl, and Battleship Potemkin.
Anyone know where I could go about looking for videotapes? The show’s name makes it all but impossible to Google it.
I checked on TVshowsonDVD.com, but they had no mention of it (yet). If it ever gets released on DVD, it will show up there.
Another possibility might be to simply write to the show’s producers and ask if they are planning on releasing the series to DVD/VHS anytime in the near future.
Eve, why not try contacting the WB network directly?
The WB Network
Follow the “About Us” link at the bottom to find contact info.
I also had some luck Googling “WB Network Popular.” Try the fan sites and message boards – you might find someone who has tapes and would be willing to share.
Another avenue might be Touchstone Television/Buena Vista, the show’s production company. (I ran in circles trying to find online info, but maybe with your showbiz connections you can find a better way.)
Hmm. I don’t think Anita Page or Kay Kendall’s sister will do me much good. But thanks, I will try the WB. I have looked at the fan sites, but too many of them are giggly teenage girls who did not “get” the show in the first place . . .
I tend to buy discontinued or cancelled tv series from ebay. I have gotten deals typically. Usually if the episodes are of dubiuous quality they will mention it in the advert. For example, when I recently bought the Convington Cross series the dealer said the video quality wasn’t perfect but it included the unaired episodes which made it all the better for me.
