My wife wants a warm leather coat for christmas. Dutifully, today I braved the mall and went to Sears, Kohl’s, Macy’s, JCPenney, and some leather place in the mall. All of them had leather jackets with little or no insulation.
WTF? I guess leather is just a fashion statement now, not somethign you use to keep warm? Why would you kill a perfectly innocent sheep to use for a coat, and then not put some of that nice warm woll in there with it?
I have a warm leather coat from Wilsons Leather. I fear that may have been the leather place in the mall you visited. Mine has a zip-out liner made of Thinsulate™. My husband has one as well. He doesn’t wear his much because it keeps him too warm. Too warm is a concept I have trouble understanding as I am always cold.
Anyway, the Thinsulate doesn’t add much bulk, so the coat is warmer than it appears. Do not discount modern insulative materials.
I, too, have a Thinsulate-lined leather coat from Wilson’s Leather, but I find that it really only keeps me comfortably warm when it’s at least 40 F outside, although it’s OK down to about freezing. Below freezing, or in any sort of wet weather, I need something else.
