Folks, I need your help. My old social security card has dissappeared from the face of the Earth as far as I can tell. I last saw it when I started work at KMart almost two years ago, after which I thought I gave it back to my dad to put in a locked filing cabinet, but now he says he can’t find it. So where do I need to go, or who do I need to talk to, about getting a new one?
Uh… start in the phone book. Look for a local office of the Social Security Administration. Call them. You’ll probably have to take some ID with you and fill out a form or two. They’ll either print a new one for ya, or mail it to you.
If you lived in Jackson, I’d say 7th floor of the federal building, but that won’t help ya.
I had to go through this process a few months ago when I moved and needed the card.
The application can be found at this link (it’s an Adobe file, so you need that to read it).
Print this out and fill it out. Take it to your local Social Security office with a birth certificate and a form of picture ID (driver’s license). They take the application, mark on it that they’ve seen your proofs, and mail you the card in about two weeks.
(If you don’t want to be bothered with printing out the form, just hie thee down to the office. It’s a simple page to fill out, even for a guvvument form.
It takes about two weeks for the new card to arrive, but you should get a 1-800 number when you submit the form. You should be able to phone it the next day and they will tell you your number.
When the new card turns up, photocopy it, scan it and as with all data, back it up in at least two seperate places.
