Quite a few of you here have professed your love for Madlib, and after checking out a couple songs, I finally understand what everyone’s been on about.
So please, tell me where to start. I prefer funkier groove loops and samples over just straight turntablism, if that’s any help. I want an album or two that I can chill or drive too, but also put on for parties here. I’m not necessarily looking for his oldest stuff, but I want to hear his best.
His discography is quite daunting, so tell me where to start…
His Beat Kunducta albums are good. Well the first two at least, Vol 1-2: Movie Scenes and Vol 3-4: In India, haven’t heard the rest. The tracks are short, but I would maybe start with some of these for party background music.
“Soon the New Day” of off Talib Kweli’s Ear Drum is very chill. Incidently, my favorite album of Kweli’s; well, maybe Blackstar.
“One Beer” from MF Doom’s Mmm…Food has made it’s way into the permanent hip-hop singles folder on my mp3 player. He also did the entire MadVillany with MF Doom, which is a solid album; many would argue it’s a classic.
I never could get on board with his whole Quasimoto thing though; that just bugs.
