Where do people get their SDMB names from?

I’m always glad of these threads, since they allow me to clarify that I’m not a felicide or a roadkill admirer :). I signed up to the Dope out of curiosity, and we all know what that does to cats. My name was intended to convey especial curiosity.

Mine is from a random creature in Alan Dean Foster’s Journeys of the Catechist series. Pretty darn obscure, which is why I picked it.

Well see, back during WWII I was on this all female baseball team. One of our players had this very annoying kid and…

Mine is my real-life nickname.

My father’s ancestry (and my grandparents’ first language) is Walloon, i.e., French-speaking Belgian.

Mine is an amalgamation of “Freekshow” and “Juggalette.”

Freekshow is one of my favorite cds, by the rap duo Twiztid, and represents someone who is different and considered an outcast by “normal” people.

A Juggalette is a female fan of Twiztid and their good buddies ICP, who represent triumph over evil and embracing individuality.

Please note that these are my interpretations of the music and that everyone’s MMV.

Also, please don’t think poorly of me for my taste in music, as I am actually quite diverse and don’t fit the normal Juggalette stereotypes.

I took my name from the opening of line of Station to Station (I was a thin, white, obsessive Bowie fan. I’m no longer obsessive or quite as thin). But I thought posts by “The Thin White Duke” might lack a certain gravitas in Great Debates, so I tried to make a proper name out of it: T.W. Duke. Unfortunately, I had just registered on another site that does not allow punctuation and spaces in usernames and forgot that this one did.

If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to throw some darts.

where my name comes from? (HINT) VERY old SciFi

Thomas is my middle name, and Atomicktom is just an alliteration of that, which is generally my username online. The “k” comes from the fact that the first time I tried to sign up somewhere to use it, “atomictom” was already taken.

The whole genesis of this thing comes from middle school, when a friend of mine was trying to convince me to sign up for a BBS. He said I needed a handle, and suggested something like “Tommy Atomic” (I don’t remember exactly).

bbs = big baby sweets

not bulletin board system

don’t tell anyone

Beebs, we’ve talked about it before. I’m hurt that you forgot! sob

Now I’m gonna tell everyone.

One of my fave composers.

This is as good a place as any for a lurker to make his first post…

An old girlfriend would accuse me of “turtle-ing” whenever I’d retreat instead of dealing with some issue between us. The turtle (and cousins) have kind of been a totem for me since, as well as a reminder to stick my neck out one in a while.

Welcome to the boards!!

Hey, that’s my hometown!

BTW, my name is one of those classic Simpsons references. (Think Jasper in the freezer at the Kwik-E-Mart.)

I’m a corporate retail store manager for T-mobile. Before that I was a retail store manager for US cellular and before that AT&T. I like answering questions about the cellular industry when I can. On another board I used to go to I was summoned once by someone saying “hey just ask that T-mobile guy”

I’d been using the handle Cat ^…^ for several years when I stumbled upon the SD. At the time, though, there were a LOT of users with variants of “Cat” as their username, including one who used a similar symbol, though with the added whiskers (=^…^=).

With so many Cat People, I decided to pick something less used, and the first thing that came to mind when trying to think of something “not Cat” was Dog. However, actually choosing the handle “Dog” didn’t feel right, so I just went with the first dog name that popped into my head, which was my sister’s dog, Shayna.

Woof Woof.

I shamelessly stole it, but I can’t remember from whom…

Back in high school (which was quite a few years ago now), I played intramural baseball one year (or maybe it was basketball, or flag football?)…anyway, we all chose names for our teams. We had teams like the Giants, Dodgers, “Mr. Smith’s Homeroom”, etc…

And “The Suburban Plankton”.

It wasn’t my team, but apparently the name stuck in my head somewhere, because when I signed up here close to 20 years later it was the first thing that sprung to mind…

I now use it everywhere I go online.

I lived in Germany - specifically Berlin - for many years.
So, using parts of my real name, I called myself the German currency of DMark.
Of course, now there are no more DMark’s in Germany - only Euros.

So - my SDMB name is now obsolete…but to be quite honest, when I originally signed up here, I never gave my SDMB name all that much thought and I deserve this fate. I shoulda gone with 12inchStudMuffin.

I live 22 kilometers east of the nearest city. That’s about as original as I can get right now.
