Where do you buy your clothes?

Cyn, you and I share precisely the same sizes. If you ever want to trade, you know where to find my e-mail…

Wal Mart had some gorgeous (and cheap) long skirts this year, and since they rarely need washing–unless you spill something or walk in mud–there’s no worry about degrading them by washing. I also found real silk scarves there. So WM is not completely worthless. Skirts are the easiest things to fit.

I agree with everyone about Ross: Until I started finding excellent bargains, I wasn’t too impressed with them, but yeah, if you’re lucky they totally rock. A trip to Ross is usually time well spent.

I loved shopping at Target last year; this year, eh, not so much.

I still get at least half my wardrobe from the Salvation Army. It can be incredible, the beautiful things you can find in thrift stores for next to nothing. You just have to expend a lot of time and shoe leather; it takes much patience. And plop everything in the washer as soon as you bring it home. (I dread the “do not wash, dry clean only” labels on some things I find there; the dry cleaning can cost double what I paid for the dress!)

I also love department store sales. Especially when silk scarves are involved. Since I always like to have genuine “nice” things on hand, I take advantage of sales at higher-end places. To pay full price there would be insanity.

Kohl’s still disappoints me a lot, I don’t know why, I go there often enough but rarely buy anything except jewelry.

E-Bay is perfect for finding more fanciful things like Renaissance style gowns that are hard to find in stores, and lots of chances at great bargains.

I’m going to follow up on ideas I got here–Nordstrom’s Rack, Marshall’s, Steve & Barry’s. Thanks, everyone!

Ebay.

I’m so high maintenence.

There’s an end of lines store near me called Ends. They get all sorts of interesting stuff. A lot of my clothing comes from there. They have La Vie En Rose underwear for $1.99 a pair right now!

My jeans are all from the Gap, and mostly $20.

Almost all my coats are from vintage stores.

I make most of my dresses.

I am a clothes-horse, but a tightwad one. I love shopping, but I hate paying very much. I figure it balances out somehow.

I LOVE Target for tops. Too bad their colors aren’t that great at the moment. Otherwise, they fit wonderfully and hold up for quite a while.

My favorite clothing store is a resale store called Buffalo Exchange. There are a few around the nation, but the one in houston is really booming. I can get either designer clothes (citizens of humanity jeans for $50 or less, Seven for all Mankind for $50 - $60, half still with tags) or less expensive clothes (Old Navy skirts with the tags still on for $7-9). All of their clothing is still somewhat in style or with tags still on and rarely is anything so ratty its falling apart.

For nice clothes I adore Banana Republic. Too bad they are so expensive, because their stuff is so pretty! It also fits me well, which frankly is a miracle.

I usually only shop at a few places, but sometimes go elsewhere:

Primarily:
Cotton Ginny
Winners

Occasionally:
Old Navy
The Bay
Addition-Elle

Basic underwear/t-shirts sometimes from Kmart or Walmart.

I’m plus size right now (16 or 18), but have been losing weight (and hope to lose much more) and now sometimes buy a few items from stores like The Gap, Eddie Bauer and Jacob.

I really wish they had Target here in Canada. :frowning:

Another loyal Kohl’s customer here.

Beach wear and related snorkelling/surfing clothing at the various bathing suit / diving stores here and Sport Chalet.

Regular clothes/sunglasses/purses at Nordstroms/Saks. Shoes mostly at Nordstrom Rack.

Other clothes/jeans from specialty designer stores.

i would rather have root canal than go shopping for clothes…I just hate it.

However, a couple times a year I force myself to go get some new clothes and go on a binge so I can get it over with.

Ross is hit or miss - sometimes I can get everything there and be done with it, other times I can’t find a single thing.

There is a Burlington outlet store here in Las Vegas that has great deals and often I can pick up new clothes for an entire year in one quick trip.

Marshalls has some good deals.

Other than that, if I happen to walk by a table at Sam’s Club with seasonal clothes, I might take 4 seconds to glance if there is anything that interests me.

I do mostly online mail order clothes shopping from Newport News and La Redoute. If go shopping out of the house, I go to Sears, Target and Walmart but it’s tough to find my size (0-Womens, 1-Juniors; not crowing, just saying). So if I see something I really like at Sears, Target and Walmart and I can’t find it in Juniors I’ll buy it anyway and have it altered.

Nordstrom Rack usually does carry my size and they have good prices and even better sales, so I’ll go there if I’m in the mood to brave the scary mall parking garage and the many annoying people. I get shoes at Target, Nordstorm Rack, La Redoute and Newport News.

I also get cool clothes from my sister, who is my size. Goodwill is often a bonus too, but I draw the line at thrift shop underwear.

Ross Ross Ross! I’m so glad I’m not the only hit-or-miss Ross shopper. I love the store, I don’t mind digging through the racks and racks of clothes because when I find something good, it’s REALLY good and it’s <$15.

If I feel like splurging, I may take a gander at Torrid or if I’m in an online shopping mood, bandlu.com.

Sometimes, SOMETIMES I can even find a shirt or pair of jeans at Walmart that I like. But not often and I won’t usually buy it unless it’s on clearance.

I can blow $80 at Barnes and Noble without batting an eyelash, but spending more than $30 on clothes makes me feel used and exploited for some reason.

It’s actually a fairly short list. Anything I have off the rack from a brick and mortar store is from Macy’s. I have a few suits and coats from tailors.

I also order sportswear and casual cloths direct from Mountain Hardwear, Pearl Izumi, or outlets such as Altrec.com. Oh, and I get a fair amount of company shirts from wherever the heck that type of stuff comes from.

I’m a retail bottom-feeder. I’ll check out anything that promises to be cheap – discount stores, outlets, department stores’ final-markdown racks, the vintage clothing at consignment shops, and garage sales. My tastes range from conservative Oxford shirts (mens, but I’ve come to prefer men’s shirts), to more bohemian styles. I’ve scored a vintage 60’s dalmation-pattern trenchcoat for a buck at a garage sale, a $3 turtleneck at Lord & Taylor, a nice long slit skirt at K-Mart, several handcrafted Peruvian wool vests at another garage sale, and 5-for-$10 Haynes T-shirts at A.C. Moore, a local arts supply store, of all places. The best deal I ever got was a black leather jacket, very roomy and long, that a nice lady had dumped on her “for free” table at her garage sale. For shoes, it’s got to be Liz Claiborne (outlet) or 9 West (outlet) – nothing else fits or feels comfy, and I refuse to pay full retail or wear ill-fitting shoes.

Most of my pants and quite a few casual tops, I’ve bought at Costco (I’m not kidding). I mostly wear Dockers to work, jeans or shorts at home.

Nice outfits: Meier & Frank (which is now Macy’s, but I haven’t bought anything since the switch), Petite Sophisticate/Casual Corner (but they’re no longer in business here), Chico’s.

Tops for work: mostly Ross and Mervyn’s.

Undies: Victoria’s Secret.

Depends on what I’m buying. For shirts and sweaters, usually I go to the Gap, but I recently got some long sleeved t-shirts at American Apparel and will definitely go back.

For jeans I usually go to the store of whatever brand of jeans I happen to like at the moment; lately it’s been either Lucky or Levi. I’ve never found jeans that I like in a discount store.

Depends what I’m buying and what it’s for. I tend to go for certain looks over particular name brands.

I just picked up a bunch of suits at Men’s Warehouse. I got some ties too but I tend to just pick those up anywhere I see a tie I like.

Sometimes I’ll go to Macy’s or Bloomingdales if I can get a good deal but I don’t really like department stores. Mostly I’ll get Ralph Lauren stuff there.

Work clothes I buy at Brooks Brother’s, Charles Tyrwhitt, Banana Republic, J Crew, Express for Men, wherever I see something I like.

And then lounging clothes like cargo shorts or T shirts I’ll just go anywhere - The Gap cause it’s right across the street, Old Navy, thrift stores, wherever.

Basically I don’t mind paying a little bit for nice clothes that look nice, but I don’t mind saving a few bucks either. I’m not against a little outlet shopping either.

In general, I don’t care much about where I shop but I do prefer outlet and discount stores to high-end places. Why pay full price for something if I don’t have to?

More specifically:

Bottoms: I tend to shop Gap/Old Navy/Banana Republic (outlet store only for BR) and Van Heusen as their petite sizes seem to be proportioned just for me.

Tops: Gah, that’s a crap shoot. It depends entirely upon what the current fashions are and who is carrying what.

Undies: Victoria’s Secret, the Legg’s/Hanes/Bali outlet, and a nice older lady who sells overstock/out of season/imperfects at the flea market.

Shoes: A guy at the flea market sells out-of-season, overstock, floor samples, etc. for decent prices, and he’s my first choice for footwear.

<< That which does not kill me had better be able to run away damn fast. >>

Ah, man, looking at those dresses at B & Lu makes me want to gain some weight so I can wear them. Those are adorable! Especially this one and this one. Both of them are the kind of style I like to wear, too. :frowning: (This is feeling pretty weird–how many college girls have stared despondently at their computer screen and gone, “Dammit, I wish I was fatter.”?)

A lot of my clothes come from clearance racks and outlet malls–most of them, in fact. The nicer stuff comes from NY & Co. or Kohls or my sister’s closet. I love thrift stores and garage sales, too, especially for jewelry. I really can’t bring myself to pay $25 for a necklace made from plastic beads, but fifty cents or a dollar sounds about right. Underwear mostly comes from Marshalls–formerly 10/pair now .99? Heck, yes! Nice for shoes, too, along with DSW.

I used to shop a lot at Old Navy, but the sizing on their clothing is really hit-or-miss. Then really long shirts came into style and I had a hard time finding any that didn’t reach halfway to my knees. That was just plain unacceptable.

I’d really, really like to be able to shop at Ann Taylor, but that is right out of my price range. I’d probably feel a little guilty spending $100 on a non-formal outfit. And yet I can spend twice that on one of my Elizabethan dresses and feel I got off cheap. It must sting less when it’s spread out.

I’m buying most of my clothes from my employer right now. We get a deep discount on the wholesale cost, so pay about 15%-20% of the retail cost. Woot! Also get a pretty good discount on retail at stores owned by our giant American parent company, so when going out shopping for “nice” stuff, I hit those first.

Other than that, I generally head down to scenic Hastings St. to pick over the cheap gear at ARMY & NAVY, bountiful source of socks, underwear, t-shirts, and knocking-about trousers.
