While Christmas shopping this week, I decided to pick some socks for myself. Usually, I wear over the calf. Yet, I couldn’t find them. Instead, there were rows and rows of ankle socks. Another shopper commented how it look liked the little girls’ section. Since I’m not one for fashion, what’s up with these socks?

At some point or another, someone decided that visible socks were unsightly and uncouth. In order to fix this problem (and sell new socks to all the people who’d been previously satisfied with their socks that were occasionally visible), they began promoting massive amounts of ankle socks. A few years back, I can recall the first inklings of this strange movement: fashion magazines and blogs were exclaiming with horror and disgust whenever socks were visible, likening the unfortunate and unfashionable fools to “German tourists” and other bizarre descriptions.
It appears to have started as a women’s fashion and then moved on to engulf men’s socks as well. The whole thing is a travesty and ignores one of the important functions of a sock: keeping your darned ankles warm!
Men used to wear their shorts mid thigh. As shorts got longer and longer back in the 80s it looked bad to wear the tube socks.
So you had short pants and tube socks that came up to your mid calf.
In order to get the same amount of the leg exposed when men’s shorts came down in length the socks got shorter in length.
Now with shorts coming down past the knees ankle socks are in, because that’s really all that’s left without going sockless
Actually, I thought that the board’s Admins. banned them when they caught them.
