Where is the outrage?!! (Ben Carson - Muslims unfit to be POTUS)

*I Aim for the Stars - But Sometimes, I Hit London. *

  • Autobiography of Werner von Branun

FWIW I would have no problem with a Muslim President that I wouldn’t have with any other religious orientation (or non-orientation). In each case I care that they keep their religious beliefs/non-belief as a personal matter. I understand that some were afraid that Kennedy would answer to the Pope, and am sure that if Sanders got a general election nod he would be accused of divided loyalties as well. And there were some who published articles seriously entitled “Why I Don’t Think A Mormon Should Be President.” The individual matters greatly. That one, no. But in the GOP primaries? Yes it made his row a more difficult one to hoe.

That said I suspect Carson was really trolling for attention more than anything else.

Why relatively little outrage? DNFTT.

I felt this way, too, up until the mid-1990s or so. If in some alternate history I’d become a U.S. citizen when I was 18, I could easily see myself voting for Bush in 1988 and 1992, maybe Dole in '96, but after that, the Republican Party’s descent into madness would be undeniable. I would have gladly voted Gore in 2000, reluctantly Kerry in 2004, happily for Hillary in the '08 primaries, unenthusiastically for Obama in the '08 general and in 2012, and in all cases having written off the corresponding Republican candidate as unacceptable, though McCain was close and might have been okay had he picked a Veep candidate that didn’t make my eyes and ears bleed every time she said something on TV.

Indeed. Why bother getting worked up about any of these clowns since 90% of them will evaporate by January. It’s kind of like getting emotionally involved in the drama of Survivor three months before the season starts.

Well, at least we now have our excuse. The talking points spread fast.

Why don’t you go and bring up Benghazi again, kid.

"Once the rockets go up, who cares WHERE they come down?
-That’s not my department, says Werner Von Braun

-Tom lehrer, of course.

I just love how you make up these essential tests for the Ds out of your convenient imagination, and then convict them for failing in the task you’ve set them. Does your focus group vet each attempt?

Is it really that hard to say that you’d be okay with a Muslim as President? Before they actually said what they said, would you not have assumed that this was a pretty easy thing to say in response to Carson?

at least I can admit that Carson appalled and disappointed me. I guess whatever Democrats say is okay by you? Never mind that in almost any other situation, even with a fairly inconsequential person who isn’t running for President, they’d be rushing to condemn it if the target was women, Jews, Latinos, or African-Americans. But Muslims, well, that’s complicated, better not condemn it too harshly. When Jews are slandered, or women, or blacks, the Democrats echo pretty much verbatim whatever the ADL, NAACP, or womens’ groups say in protest. But here, they can’t seem to distance themselves too fast from CAIR.

C’mon, it shouldn’t be hard to admit that Democrats are cowards. They’ve been cowardly for as long as I can remember, even most Democratic commentators like Jon Stewart have been willing to say that pretty loudly forever.

Andre Carson hasn’t instituted Sharia here. Yet.

Personally, I don’t think young Earth creationists are fit to be president. I’m a bigot like that.

Carson, clarifying his remarks:

I think that’s right. Will you swear to place the Constitution above your religion? Actually, first learn the Constitution, then answer that question(speaking to Carson here).

nm

Well, that rules out Huckabee and Kim Davis, doesn’t it?

W. C. Fields said “never lighten up a chump.” Why should Democrats lighten up the bunch of chumps called the Republican candidates?
Carson sank in the polls, below Fiorina, after the debate. Maybe he was trying a Trump troll to get traction again.
And since we already have a Muslim Congressman, we have an existence proof of a Muslim who will swear to the Constitution.

Rocket scientists will never make it. Moon landing deniers would do better with the base.

No one ever lost support by underestimating the intelligence of the Republican base.

Not exactly the key phrase in the quote you yourself provided, is it? Here, let me help: “If someone has a Muslim background and they’re willing to reject those tenets and to accept the way of life that we have …”

IOW a Muslim can become qualified to hold office only by rejecting Islam, since “the American way of life” is incompatible with Islam. That is not an improvement, although it may indeed be a “clarification” of his remarks.

I’m not George W Bush’s biggest fan, but he is still better than so much of the current Republican party.

The current Republican party has moved past Bush, past Dick Cheney-land, and into Rick Santorum-ville. (or vile, if you prefer)

I say that with foolish hopes that a centrist or less partisan or less batshit person will arrive and clean up the party. Not that I’d vote for a Republican at that time, they still support all the wrong things for the country, but, the country would at least be less fucked if they got elected because there wouldn’t be a totally insanely crazy person involved.

Oh god, what I wouldn’t give for a Bob dole or a George H. W. Bush or a Richard fricking Nixon these days. My god, they’re liberals by comparison to the modern Republican party, and geniuses as well.

List of things I can applaud the Republican party for doing since the year 2000:

List of elected Republicans I can respect in any way, shape or form since the year 2000:

Used to have McCain on it. :frowning:

I mean, Ron paul is totally batshit but he would at least oppose a lot of the corruption, even though he’d also dismember the vital organs that make this country function in the process. Killing the patient along with the plague.

But maybe Congress would rein him in. Still, with Republicans in control of Congress you can’t risk it. They’d de-fund everything and give giant piles of cash to the same douchebags raising the price of pills from 17.50 to 700 dollars, because those are the people our government needs to help the most.

Current Republican party: “I hates queers and brown people, and I’ll shoot anyone who don’t agree, go troops n cops no matter what they do, woo hoo!”

Hillary responds pretty definitively – yes, a Muslim can be president.

Once again, Dr. Carson has been viciously slandered. He did NOT say that a muslim could not be president. what he did say is that someone who believes in sharia law and (rejects the tenets of the US Constitution) should not be president. I have no problem with this. Islam and its belief in theocratic government is not compatible with the US Constitution. that is what he was saying.
But of course, any semblance of truth is irrelevant to the PC crowd.

How about if that person has a *Christian *background? Doctor, you’re quite willing to subordinate the Constitution to your particular concept of Christianity, creationism and all, aren’t you?

That’s simply false. His own words are very clear, and they’re quoted just a couple posts up.

Goddamn, would you try just once to say something that’s not completely fucking ignorant? Educate yourself, fool.
