Where is this theatre?

…or “Theater”, I suppose, since it’s in the U.S.

I saw it in an album on The Chive featuring pictures of the olden-days in the U.S. A Google search turns up a bunch of “Orpheum” theatres all over the place so I hoped that a Doper might recognize it.

Thanks!

I’m going to say San Francisco.

(Image search leads me to a set of “Pictures from a visit to the USA as taken by a U.N. Soviet Diplomat” in 1967.

A diplomat who really really liked titty bars.

Dr Zhivago came out in 1965, so the photo is most likely from around then.

It is the SF Orpheum. The picture is from its days as a cinema in the sixties and seventies. The marqee has been changed since them, but if the picture showed more of the building you would see the vertical ORPHEUM sign that’s still there to this day.

Yes, SF. Recognizable in it’s current form:

DefinitelySan Francisco.

The sign has been replaced since the 60s, but the rest of the architecture matches.

Thanks so much - I knew I could count on you guys.

MODS: feel free to close this thread, my question has been answered and curiosity satisfied.

Here’s another picture of the theatre. One big change since the 1960s is the stairway in front of the theatre leading down to two subways (BART and MUNI).
