Where no meal has gone before (combos no one but you are eating)

Yeah for me I like my shepherd’s pie heavy on the Worcestershire. I don’t think soy would work for me—I’m not the biggest fan of soy sauce in general, but I do use it. I’m more into fish sauce or oyster sauce. (But not for shepherd’s pie.)

A sort of spiritual cousin to tortilla chips and hummus might be guacamole and krupuk (a crispy Indonesian cracker made with rice flour that is classically shrimp-flavored, although you can get other flavors such as onion, garlic, and fish). That’s a bizarre combo if there ever was one, and yet it’s delicious. I first had it at a well known restaurant in Ubud, Bali (Murni’s Warung, for anyone who has been there) and thought at first they were making some kind of emergency substitution, since who in their right mind would match krupuk with guacamole? But I tried it and found it was an exceptionally good pairing.

I eat hummus with Wheat Thins every day. It’s awesome.

This is isn’t too weird, but I came up with this sandwich when I was working actually at work and had a refregerator in my office.

Dark rye bread, toasted. A liberal amount of cream cheese. Sliced tomato salted. Roast beef with ground pepper. It’s yummy.

Oh, and mustard or horseradish works with this.

I’ve actually done something similar, although in my case it was a very thin schmeer of cream cheese over the dark rye. Making a bread-oil-tomato water barrier in the same way butter or another fat/oil based spread would have done.

These days I only eat fresh tomatoes from my MiL’s garden in season, which are so good. But they WILL sog the hell out of bread. It was pretty good, but I only made it because I was trying to use up the cream cheese after having finished off the last of my bagels (too many empty calories to allow myself to buy often) after a friend’s visit (same for the good roast beef, at $19.99/lb I don’t buy it for myself anymore :frowning: ).

My go-to cheese (English extra mature cheddar) sandwich is layered with mayonnaise, sliced cucumber and Marmite. A wonderful combination of textures and flavours.

I always suspected Marmite was made out of marmosets.
Kidding.

I enjoy a scrambled egg and ketchup sandwich on white bread with butter, salt and pepper.

Sounds yum! And unusual, yes, although there do seem to be a lot of recipes for shrimp guacamole out there, so eating guacamole with shrimp crackers may not be that bizarre a departure from the norm.

Not now they are an endangered species!

My dad used to enjoy a slice of white bread spread with condensed milk and topped with a slice of raw onion.

You couldn’t pay me to eat that, but he loved them.

My dad would eat peanut butter, butter, onion, and horseradish sandwiches on white bread.

He attributed it to growing up in the depression with 9 siblings. Other things he learned to eat then were pigs brains with scrambled eggs, head cheese, and trout eggs.

I’ll see you and raise you tasty cheddar cheese, sliced beetroot (from a tin) and sliced raw brown onion, lots of ground white pepper and a little salt.

I was scrounging around for something to eat for breakfast once and just about the only thing I had at that time was frozen waffles and an avocado. I toasted them up and spread the avo on them - it’s become my Sunday morning tradition.

All this talk about necessity being the mother of culinary invention has given me a flashback to my freshman year of college. I lived in a dorm with a full meal plan, so my roommate and I didn’t store much in the way of food in our room. But one night I got home late with a bad case of the munchies and tried to figure out something to eat from our limited supplies. I ended up mixing together toasted wheat germ, cocoa, and sugar, and eating it straight.

It tasted surprisingly good, but I was extremely stoned so my judgment probably wasn’t the greatest. (It sounds awfully dry. Presumably I was washing it down with a glass of water.)

my family has a thing for eating peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches…

And due to the atrocious and possibly illegal food they served us in jr high we learned to put either ranch or bbq sauce on everything … to the point of the cafeteria buying 200 bucks worth of sauce a month… becuase the frozen ketchup and mustard packs were years old …

That’s definitely a thing - my friends and I used to eat those. Even better if you put pickles on, too!

I remember trying peanut butter and mayo back when I was in sixth grade. It was okay, but not something I want to have again.

I had some friends around that time who liked eating peanut butter and celery. I could never get into it.

I do, however, love peanut butter and bacon. Remember those jars of peanut butter with artificial bacon chips added? A different kind of “chunky.”

Anybody like peanut butter and honey sandwiches?

I’d eat them, if they were offered, but they weren’t my favourite. My sister, however, absolutely loved them, and had them most days for lunch when we were kids.

As long as we’re doing “peanut butter and ___,” does anybody like peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches? I rather liked those.

One night in the pub, I ordered myself a large basket of fries, knowing that the football-watching friends would sneak some. Mixed a little pool at one end of the basket: 3 parts ketchup, 2 parts A1 Steak Sauce, and 1 part BBQ sauce.

It’s now called The Concoction, and I’m pressed into service whenever anyone orders fries.
