They’re fine, but IMHO better with “Hot” honey (generally honey with a cassia and capsicum addition).
I like to think of myself as the inventor of the grilled Nutella sandwich, if only because I’d never read about anyone else making one before I came up with the idea, and any time I describe it to someone they look at me like I’ve lost my mind.
It’s made exactly the same way as a grilled cheese sandwich, but instead of sliced processed cheese between the pieces of buttered bread, both slices are spread liberally with Nutella before cooking until brown in a cast iron skillet. It’s a tasty dessert that combines sweet and savory.
Colman’s feels like it would be too strong to me. I use French’s when I mustard up my beans, because the mild sour flavor pairs nicely with the umami flavor of the bean broth.
I see this thread is at least partly evolving into a “peanut butter plus” thread; so here is a new thread to discuss that subject.
Personally, I support almost any combination of peanuts, ideally ground up, with other foods.
Yeah, I do that for my reubens too. swiss cheese next to the bread because sauerkraut is so wet. Then cornbeef on the other piece of bread with the kraut in the middle between the two gaskets (as I call this configuration). I also intermix swiss cheese in the pile of corned beef. I love me a good reuben.
We ate those as kids. My mom also would give us apple slices with honey to dip them in. I always thought apple and honey was a common thing everyone ate, but I’ve had people tell me it sounded awful.
Slices of apple dipped in honey are indeed good.
I like slices of apple slathered with peanut butter too.
Ever try wedges of orange dipped in hot caramel? This was a favorite of Louis XIV, IIRC.
Apple slices dipped in honey is traditional on Rosh Hoshannah, the Jewish new year. They are eaten to ensure the coming year is a sweet one.
Similar experience here, which I was startled to find was not common with non-tribe members. My wife, who isn’t, was surprised when I did it for the first time, but found it supremely tasty, if a bit sticky. IMHO it works best with tart, or at least more sour apples (a more historical norm that modern hyper-sweet varities) for a wonderful contrast. Or hot honey, because cassia plus apples with a touch of heat?! Yes please!
Apple and honey is positively normal, I’d say. My young kids have discovered mixing sour cream and honey together as a dip for strawberries and other fruit from my Polish mother. (Though when I was growing up, she’d do sour cream and regular sugar for berries and fruit pierogi.)
The internet offers recipes for vegan “bacon” made with banana peels - here is one. I have never tried it and am not sure I ever will, but who knows - it might be good. Especially if you eat the vegan bacon with peanut butter!
I suspect I’m not the only person to have thought of this, but I recently started enjoying pineapple, anchovy, and pickled jalapenos on pizza. It started when my daughter ordered a plain pineapple pizza, and I wanted to dress it up with some ingredients I had around the house for myself. I think it works quite brilliantly, almost hints of Southeast Asia there with the sweet-and-sour fruit, fish, and chile pepper. Definitely a keeper of a combo.
It sounds disgusting, but I regularly eat mac & cheese with BBQ sauce and pickle relish mixed in.
Hmm…I could totally dig that. Will have to try next time I have some Mac and cheese
Probably not my taste (not crazy about sweet relish), but by all means enjoy!
You did just make me feel better about mac & cheese with chili, corn, and some extra cheese.
Never tried it, but it doesn’t scare me.
First, you have to toast the bread. Then you add the peanut butter. Next comes the sliced banana. Now you drizzle some honey. Chef’s kiss.
I sometimes put soy sauce on scrambled eggs.
I also consider oatmeal a savory side. So I’ll regularly combine it will some beef (I eat a lot of beef).
Supposedly (I haven’t tried it), adding salt to coffee takes away any bitterness. And speaking of coffee, I just saw somebody comment about adding butter to coffee: another thing I don’t do.
I sometimes make meat loaf with oatmeal instead of bread crumbs. Adds lots of fiber!
I’ve always done that (my mother does, too). I think it works well.
Peanut butter and syrup!
A brewery I go to had very nice grilled cheese sandwiches on their specials menu last night. I asked if they could put slices of tomato on mine, with some pizza sauce on the side. They did, and it was delicious. The folks in the kitchen liked the idea and they are adding it to their regular menu.
