My husbands great aunt and her boyfriend we believe were in the area of where the Tsumani hit. My MIL cannot exactly remember where they went for Xmas, but thought it was somewhere near there. Since no one has called and there is no answer at the Great Aunt’s place, it is really bothering her. Neither have any children and the only living relative is the Great Aunts older sister, my husbands grandmother who is not on speaking terms with her sister for quite some time.
I cannot find a list on line english or german with the names on it. Is there?
Shirley, which area were they thought to be vacationing in? There is a list of some missing persons in the Phuket area. I don’t know if this includes the area of Phang Nga bay and Khao Lak or Phi Phi island, but it is the largest foreign language publication in the area so it probably covers those to some extent. You can try looking and/or posting there. Note: that list is certainly not exhaustive.
Is there no one in Germany who can give you more information?
My MIL waffles on the location of where her aunt ( who is only a few years older than her.) When the Tsunami struck, every time the news said a new area of devastation, that was where she thought the aunt & boyfriend were. the map my inlaws have in their house didn’t even have Sri Lanka on it. It was Ceylon. It was a map from the 1940’s.
Sadly, there is no one else to ask as the aunt buried her husband and son years ago and the boyfriend has no family left. My MIL doesn’t have the number to any of their friends that they may have.
I am not so worried ( I’m not being heartless, this aunt lost her only son who burned to death in a car accident and her husband of 40 years to bone cancer. Death by Tsunami seems relatively quick and probably less pain.) but my MIL is worried. I figure this aunt and her boyfriend are probably somewhere else and will poo poo my MIL the next time they talk in months.
I don’t know that you’re going to find any names listed online unless some private person has posted them. Governments don’t usually disclose this sort of stuff for privacy reasons. One list I found for missing Munich residents lists age and gender, and if they are a couple, but not much else. If you have a street address for them you could try a couple of things:
Send a note to a neighbor and ask to check on them. This probably won’t be too helpful since Germans are seldom in each others personal business like this. I have no idea what the names of any of our neighbors in Germany were for example.
Write to the town hall of their town and explain the situation and that you’re worried since you’ve not heard of them.
Contact a place of business or other association that would know them and ask if anyone knows where they’re off to.
Also, if this is a big concern for your MIL she can always ask them to send her an itinerary from now on. This is never a bad idea, just in case.
On preview I see DeVena’s got the consulate in Berlin listed, you might be able to save some money by find a consulate in one of the major US cities (try this link). Frankly this way is probably best since you probably won’t unduly upset some neighbors if your relatives are in Hawaii or Fiji and not Sri Lanka or Khao Lak.
I am not concerned. It is my MIL. She doesn’t know where they went and every time the news brings up a new city decimated by the disaster it is *that * place. It is very frustrating. I, personally think they went somewhere else, like FIJI or something.
