I’ve got a face-to-face interview in central London on Monday afternoon (NatWest Tower, to be precise). Later that day, at 17:00 (5 pm) I have a telephone interview. Now, my default option was to go to a nearby park, but I’m wondering where to go if it’s raining. Also, sunset is 17:13. A pub is likely to be very noisy. So, suggestions, please!
If you can get there, Canary Wharf has a few quiet areas usually in the corridors leading outside or by the river. When the weather’s reasonable South Bank can also be quiet enough.
In general I haven’t had much luck with stations as they tend to be noisy, especially in the rush hour, but looking at where you are there’s a small covered area outside Liverpool Street with a cafe, or you could try the top floor of the station which tends to be slightly quieter (most people are rushing home). Bank is likely to be heaving, as are the cafe’s around there, but there are undercover areas (between Poultry and King William Street springs to mind) if you don’t mind standing. If you can get into London early you might want to have a look round and see what you can find.
Good luck with your interviews.
Coffee shop? You could walk in, sit down with a cup of coffee and find yourself a nice quiet corner. It’s less likely to be noisy than a pub, I think. The forecast for Monday predicts rain, so I think the idea of a park might be fraught with the risk of precipitation down the collar.
How about in the peace and quiet of your hotel room, if you don’t currently live in London? Or are you just traveling in for the day?
I’m not sure on your situation, but don’t you have somewhere at home or at work you could use?
Yes but who is phone…???
I may not have time to get home from the earlier interview, especially as I’m trying to arrange additional interviews while I’m in central London. And I’m not working at present.
I’m thinking that the alcove under London Bridge might be suitable.
How about a quiet bit of a museum? Say the dusty old top floors of the Science Museum, or a less-visited part of the British Museum? I know it’s not in good taste to have a mobile phone conversation in a museum, but I’m sure there are some bits where you won’t be disturbed (or disturb anyone else).
Don’t tell me they’ve gotten rid of all the red telephone boxes! There were still a few across from where I stayed on Belgrave Rd. in 2007.
