Can’t really answer your general question, but I remember when they were shooting some of the scenes in Manhattan Beach, CA. This site supports my sometimes dubious powers of recollection.
I remember seeing some activity on Tequila Sunrise at Santa Monica Airport. I was in the Civil Air Patrol at the time, and noticed something going on one night. But I’ve never seen the movie, and it’s been a long time. So that’s about all I’ve got.
Incidentally, I was getting my helicopter license when Forever Young was being made. There was an abandoned dirt strip out in the Simi Valley where we would go to practice. When they started shooting that film we were banished to another part of the Valley.
Ah, usually we just make up stuff like that. It’s far easier, and much more entertaining that way.
