Where will the SDMB be in five years?

With so many members coming and going, do you think in five years, the members as we know them will be replaced by a new set of people, leaving one or two people from “way back”?

Do you think this board will even exist?

What if it got shut down from lack of funds? Or merged with another website and became a entirely different kind of board?

Am I even making any sense here?

They’re members, but not as we know them.

Nooooooooo! The Board will be here forever. And mommy will not run away with a male stripper and daddy will not marry another daddy.

: clutching teddy bear :

There’ll be 120,000 members and handy will have 17495 posts.

Do you really think that handy will slow down that much? :stuck_out_tongue:

[ul] [sup]He died?[/sup][/ul]

kinz, since you seem to have missed this recent event, see the thread Are you all happy now? (handy has been banned).

Oi crosses fingers hoping it won’t turn into a “HANDY BANNED” thread any longer

Add on question:

Will people keep talking about sex with such glorified details?

[hijack]Sheesh. I miss all the good stuff.
The interesting aspect of it all is that the boards seem to be running faster. Could be a fluke due to the holiday weekend. [/hijack]
But, back on topic, where will we be in five years?

Still here, only more bloated.

It will be turned into pure energy and seek out and destroy ignorance with loving hellfire.

I predict that it will have become a pay-subscription site. But the price will be so unreasonable that no one will buy it. That will give the iReader enough of an excuse to shut it down, and sell the servers to a porno company.

Y’know, just like the networks do with all their quality shows. Just substitute “shift the timeslot around” for “subscription membership.”

I sure hope so. That’s the main reason I read the board.

Bob

In five years, shortly after the Supreme Court declares the 2008 election null and void, and proclaims Dubya as “Imperial President for Life” the SDMB will be declared subversive and its archives will have been seized so that they can be data mined for treasonous opinions.

I dunno where it will be, but I really hope it will be around when the first child of one of the couples who met here turns 13 and registers. I’ll love to see how the warped upbringing has turned out.

Oh, and the Straight Dope Store will be selling brain implants so we can post directly from the cerebrum or lack thereof. The mind boggles at the thought.

November 30, 2008:

Members of the SDMB shout their heads off over the results of the recent Presidential elections. The members that enjoy paranoia will engage in paranoia.

Over in Cafe Society, there will be a discussion of “[insert annoying movie title] IV”, Eve will have an obit out, and someone will want to talk about Tolkien.

“Newbies” are asking who or what december, Opal, and 1920’s style death-rays are.

No different from now, really. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Not sure what you meant here, but I hope Eve gets the chance to be as old as me.

Hopefully, it’ll be here:

I’d hate to have to update my bookmark.

Governor Quinn means that Eve will still be informing us of the deaths of people who were famous in the 1940’s.

Great Debates will be exactly the same as it is right now. People yelling at each other about the same topics. Just like now. People “debunking” angels, discussing religion, and bitching about Bill Clinton and GWB. Just like now.

But at least december, handy, and The Ryan will still be banned.

Huh. Didn’t know about the handy banning. Interesting.

At the rate membership is growing on this board we’ll have 300,000 in 5 years time. There will be a dozen moderators for each forum (twice that for the BBQ Pit), several rabid posters will hit the magic 50K posts mark, Cecil and Ed Zotti will have an arguement in GD and out each other, and world ignorance will be approximately the same. Oh, and the hamsters will be replaced by Komodo dragons <crosses fingers>.
