Where would you go for resume help?

A friend turned me on to this great job opportunity that I am pretty much qualified for. The problem is that my work history doesn’t look that great on paper. I want to beef up my resume and tailor it to this specific job. I also want to get help with the cover letter and such.

Like I said, I am qualified for this, even if it’s a lofty goal. I think if I could get my foot in the door for an interview it would be mine. I make a good impression in person and I’ve never been turned down for a job once I’ve had an interview.

Any advice on this? They want resumes, etc. mailed to them rather than emailed, so I want to get this out within the next few days. I really really want this job, but I am very nervous about the way my resume looks.

(And yes, I’ve tried books on resumes. They just don’t help much. I think I need to hire someone to help with it.)

Do you know anyone who works in human resources at all? They’re often good resources to tap for help with resumes, without having to pay lots of $$ to get someone to re-write it for you.

Do you mind if I ask what sort of position it is, and what sort of work history/other experiences you have? I’m not a professional resume writer, but I’ve worked for a recruitment firm where I was in charge of culling the resumes before forwarding them to the boss, so I’ve got a bit of an idea of how to help tart one up if you’re just looking for some general ideas.

I don’t know if this is true for everywhere, but my junior college has a job center and provides resume help. You might call colleges/universities around your area and see if there is similar help there.

One of my chess mates was in Personnel. Although my resume was acceptable, he really tidied it up and emphasised my strengths.

Can you find someone similar?
