Where would you go? (move to another country)

Finland. I’m pretty sure I’d fit in well there. Lots of folks can speak English, and I know enough Finnish curses to get by. And I’d have lots of relatives, even though none of them would know me from Adam.

First choice would be Paris.

Second would be Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Probably Panama. It already has a large ex-pat American community and is very Americanized. Failing that, I’d look into the Caribbean islands and see which one best fit my needs.

Yep, but Australia and England are possibilities.

India. Cool summers in Kashmir, warm winters in Goa.

Dirt cheap living costs, great food, incredible scenery, amazing historical sites, friendly people and they all speak English.

Victoria B.C. It’s a ferry ride from where I plan to retire in a year or two, the top of the Olympic peninsula in Washington. New Zealand would also be a consideration.

Either Costa Rica or the Caymans. Costa Rica is relatively well-governed and a gorgeous place to live and the Caymans? Well, a notable lack of banking laws would make employment simple.

Maybe back to the US. The other obvious possibility would be to go back to Japan.

My husband would be happy literally anywhere, so the decision would be entirely mine. Of all the places I’ve visited, I’d opt for one of the towns in the French Riviera. Nice is like a smaller version of Paris, and I felt very comfortable there.

I would move to the UK, and immediately start whining when the Crown didn’t offer me a knighthood.

Costa Rica - Plenty US expats, the fishing is great, and the weather is perfect. Any winter in which we get the threat of a freeze I threaten my SO(he likes cooler weather) with moving further south anyhow.

Not a day goes by in the local news where there isn’t beatings, stabbings, robberies and other violence in Fredericton. Also, Acadians will force you to learn french, or no work for you. That goes for the entire province.

Do not try Pitcairn.

That story is nine years old. Now, I’m not in a position to say if things have or have not improved there. But I am pointing out that it’s old news.

Thanks for the offer, but unless Civil War II breaks out before then, it will be at least a decade before Mrs. Homie and I leave.

Oh, it is. And maybe things have changed some. But when you start digging into the story it is pretty depressing just how pervasively toxic the culture there was. I have my doubts that the weight of generations of abuse have been cured in a decade.

I’m sad nobody said the Philippines.

It’s like Hawaii and Costa Rica, but MUCH cheaper and even more beautiful. You can have a cook, a maid, and a driver for a few hundred a month, and live like a king in a gorgeous beach-side house for what a studio apartment costs in any major city in the US. Healthcare in the major metro areas/hospitals is as good as in the US, and an order of magnitude cheaper (or more), even 100% out of pocket. Most local folk speak English, and there’s plenty of Expats.

The Philippines is my go-to “screw this noise, I’m outta here” backup plan if I give up on my current US-centric business endeavors, for this and other reasons.

But since I’d presumably still want to work if this were happening in a soonish timescale, France would be my first choice, followed by Italy, because sadly, like most tropical paradises, you have to be able to bring your job (or company) with you if you want to live in the Philippines, and I’m not able to do that with my current setup.

France and Italy, however, have developed economies with demand for my skillset, and I could probably find work there relatively easily.

Quarantine laws for imported doggos have relaxed a bit.

I’ve lived in the US, Australia and now I’m in the UK.

If I had to flee, New Zealand or Canada. But NZ would be my first choice.

My wife is from Vietnam, she has family there. I can’t get a permanent visa and would have to make visa runs to Laos, Cambodia or Thailand at least every year.
Thailand has a retirement visa for people over 50 years old.
Both of those are assuming that we have social Secruity, which is eight years off for me and nine years off for the wife, or that we sell the hosue and arrive with $200,000 in bank, which is realistic.
