Where's the PSP thread?

If there is an obvious one somewhere please forgive this one.
I got mine this morning… a day late I might add. My two games I ordered with it will now be at least two days late.

I was tempted to use it’s browser to post here but thought someone has probably already tried that and it would be a pain in the a[r]s[e] with the mobile-phone style input method.
It has a habit of hanging in the browser. The volume, headphones or no (I didn’t use the crappy ones that came with it… I have some good inner-ear ones), is crap. I guess I won’t be using it as my primary portable mp3 player unless something can be done about that. But then it’s too big and complicated to be risking the kind of…well, risks that are associated with mp3 players. (battered about in pockets…being fallen asleep on… dropped… used a lot)

The screen is nice and bright and impressive. The browser is fast (when it’s responding)

But I’m yet to experience it’s two primary uses… games and films… as I don’t have any (thanks again amazon). I might buy one (of each) in town.
Does owning one of these make me an overgrown kid?

Probably, and I am one too.

Here are a few tips:

  • I’ve got it as an MP3 player and its been living in my pocket since december. No problems there. If the volume is a problem for you, you must either have incredibly high watt headphones. My Sennheisers are sometimes on full volume, but they are HD265 linears, studio material and you only notice that you’ve gotten them on too loud after the pain kicks in, no distortion there at any volume. I have no such problems with decent plugs which can play loud enough to damage your ears, as many people seem to do these days (no kidding, its scary to see how many are deaf at 40).
  • for the browser, make sure you turn the power-saving off for your wireless in the settings. That destroys its performance when browsing and should be used at best only for gaming with people you meet in the street.
  • there is a website out there that has a kind of keyboard in the browser which really helps you type on the thing. Go check www.pspupdates.com if you haven’t already, its a great site with lots of info and half-decent and very busy forums.

I have written a keyboard simulator for the PSP myself (p-sprint, google for that and my name, and you’ll find a few hits), but that only works with homebrew right now, and homebrew doesn’t work on PSPs with FirmWare 2.0 (i.e. the ones that come with the browser installed).

And for the rest, it rules. A 512mb memory stick has done the trick for me so far, though the 1gb ones are becoming affordable (100 euros).

I’ll bear those tips in mind, thanks

It didn’t take me long after putting one song and one picture on the suppled 32mb card to decide to get a 512 one from amazon (well the song I put on was 12mb - Into The West - Annie Lennox - RotK Soundtrack)

I would have got a 1gb one but decided better not in the same month as buying the PSP.

The one I got (fyi they were released in Europe yesterday, hence my slight surprise at the lack of a thread already) had the firmware 2.0 on the supplied umd disk.

Forgive me… you are from Europe. So you must have an imported one if you’ve had it since December.

My headphones are an earlier model, black version of these If you can reccomend some superior in-ear earphones than those where cost no object that would be good.
