Jeez, I can’t get to sleep tonight…the least ESPN could do would be to put on the US World Cup match, which is now in progress live in Korea. People keep complaining that nobody watches soccer in this country…here I am trying my best to watch it and it isn’t on. Figures. I love baseball, but do I really need to see a rerun of the Sunday night baseball game 5 hours after it’s finished??
Well, it’s on here right now… I’m watching it! They’re at the seventh inning stretch, or half-time, or whatever you call it in soccer. So right now I’m watching Korean commercials…
If you wanna know who’s winning, send me an e-mail…
They are showing it right now on ESPN2
USA wining right now 1-0. 40 minutes to go.
I don’t have ESPN 2…but I have found ESPN.com’s GameCast, which has some running text commentary, so that will suffice as I sit at my computer. I wish they’d put it on ESPN instead of the Deuce, surely it’s of more interest than the rerun baseball game. BTW, I hear there were alot of protests going on, of the anti-American sort. Hope everything’s gonna cool down over there, this game could be a flashpoint if we win.
Gah!! Korean goal, knotted at one. I think a draw is OK for us at this point though. Just hold on for 15 minutes and pray for very little extra time.
Did you see the little sating dance the Korean guy did when they scored? Feh!
Astrogirl called me when her team scored (from her friend’s bar, where they are watching the game)… so much screaming, that all I could understand was her saying “HAPPY!!!”
I’m staying inside tonight to avoid the teargas if Korea loses…
Damn! That should have been “sKating dance”!
Wow! It is over, Corea did look better in the second half and the US should have lost, but somehow we stole a point.
OK… so we tied.
I know NOTHING about soccer; someone want to 'splain to me what that means? Do we play Korea again?
Nope - just that each team gets one point instead of the three points that would have been availiable for a win. At this stage of the competition, that’s all - in the next round, there would have been extra time and then a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner on the day.
Grim
S. Korea plays Portugal on Friday and Poland plays the USA.
As Grimpixie said, both teams were playing for points. The top two teams in each group go through to the next round, which is a more traditional ‘knock-out’ competition where a draw results in extra-time and penalty kicks. The incentive to win at the group stage is to finish in one of those two spots.
OK… thanks guys!
So we still have a chance to crush Korea, then? Hehehehehehehe!
(God! I’ve been here too long!!!)
Thanks guys, I can’t tell you how much I appreciated the spoilers… at least one of you had the courtesy to put a spoiler tag on their posts.
Geez…the question was “Where’s the soccer game”, not “Let’s talk about the damn game”. I thought I could get some info about when and where to catch the games instead of searching for them, and I get this.
Bastards.
Sorry, Airman!
here’s the complete TV schedule for the World Cup:
http://espn.go.com/soccer/wctvschedule.html
So it’s being covered across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC.
now to discuss the sport…
Aim of game - To score more goals than opponent.
2 teams. 11 players each (including goalie). Goalie allowed to use hands inside of the penalty area (big rectangle).
Game Time : 90 mins.
45 mins. first half, then break of 15 mins., then 45 mins of second half. No time outs allowed.
Win - 3 points. Draw - 1 point. Loss - 0 points.
Now, the World Cup system-
32 teams from across the world.
8 groups (A-F). 4 teams per group. USA is in Group D along with Portugal, Korea and Poland. So each team plays 1 match with each other. that’s a total of 3 matches at the group stage.
USA is in a not so easy group. Portugal has amazing talent including the World Player of the Year Luis Figo. Korea is the host and has the advantage of home support. Poland are an ok team.
At the end of the 3 matches that each team plays at the group stage, the top 2 teams move on to the knock-out stage.
my projected score for this group: USA top with 7 points ( 2 wins, 1 draw). Portugal 2nd with 6 points ( 2 wins 1 loss ).
So now 16 teams ( 2 per group, from 8 groups) advance to the knockout stage.
USA plays the team that came second in group G. That could be Mexico, Croatia or Italy. A win in this round will take the US to the quarter finals, and so on.
If there is a draw at the end of the 90 minutes of play, the game goes into extra time. that is 15 mins, then break, then 15 mins. First goal wins. match over. if no goal scored in extra time, game goes to penalty kicks. 5 penalty kicks each team, one by one. Team with more goals wins.
These are just the very basics of the beautiful game.
I will be glad to field any questions about Football (Soccer) in this (or another) thread.
I was mightily impressed by the way USA played against Portugal.
This is my first post in the Pit and i haven’t even used any foul language. so, Fuck!
Ugh, playing against Italy would suck. And Mexico would just be boring, they diddle around in the midfield for 20 minutes before they do anything. (Well, they did in '94, perhaps they’re more exciting now.) If we’re gonna lose first round, give us a team that plays an exciting game with a good press, like Brazil. Here’s rooting for Croatia, I guess.
8 groups are A-H not A-F. my bad.
If USA meet Mexico or Croatia they look good for a win. If they meet Italy, i think Italy will go through.
