Which 2014 Summer Film Will Make the Most?

Several possibilities here - I debated CA2 or X-men, but my gut says it will be Spiderman. But I hope it’s CA2.

Also, the Planet of the Apes sequel snuck up on me, but I saw the trailer and I’m looking forward to it.

I picked Despicable me 2 last time, and it made $970,000,000 ($368,000,000 domestic). I like the family-friendly movies for the big box-office take. Like the others above, I will go with How to Train Your Dragon 2.

I remember fondly the days in which there existed movies that weren’t based on comic books.

There’s only been one year in the last ten that the top grossing movie wasn’t a sequel (Avatar), so GotG is pretty unlikely to beat the various sequels this summer.

I’ll guess “How to Train a Dragon”. Its a sequel, CGI kid friendly flicks usually rank pretty high in the box-office (Frozen was the second highest grossing movie last year), and while I’m sure they’ll make big-bucks, both Captain America and the new Spiderman seem kinda second-string to the more popular superhero franchises (Iron Man, the Dark Knight).

Eh, the studios have been releasing a decent number of non-superhero sci-fi movies every year (last year had Pacific Rim, Oblivion, After Earth, Elysium, etc.). The problem is that they generally haven’t been very good or very lucrative. But maybe Jupiter Ascending will break the trend.

I’m voting Spider-Man domestic, Transformers all markets.

It’s not exactly a sequel, but it does tie in to the existing and popular Marvel cinematic universe, so it might still get some of the benefits of being a sequel.

Like I said, though, it’s a bit of a long shot.

Not technically summer yet, but Cap is going to take some beating by the looks of things. Deservedly too

The question is now, what can/will beat Captain America?

Holy crap that’s a lot of money for an April release.

Yeah, I didn’t realize there was this much pent-up demand for a 2nd Captain America. I’m not going to be able to see it until next weekend so I didn’t want to enter and post in the movie thread. I have get caught up after a film festival and being sick. I plan to see that, Noah and Divergent on the same day.

Holy shit. Even without knowing much about Noah and nothing about Divergent, that’s a hell of a ride. Cap 2 is awesome. If the other two are even semi-decent you’re gonna be worn slap out after your movie marathon.

Back on topic, Cap 2 opened big and is probably going to get bigger with good reviews and word-of-mouth. It gets my vote for biggest box office success of the year.

Captain has pulled in $229,381,211 in four weeks domestic. If you count foreign he has $679,855,480.

Spidey brought in $91,608,337 its opening weekend.

I believe that’s less than Cap did.

It’s as close to official as it is going to get. Guardians of the Galaxy is the number 1 domestic grossing movie of the year and the summer. It is currently $262 million domestic and $507 million worldwide.** Transformers 4** is the highest grossing worldwide (sorry I couldn’t find a better link) at $1.06 billion but with $243 million domestic. China’s box office was actually higher than the U.S. for Transformers at $301 million.

X-Men (my domestic prediction - due to good date, a sequel, and positive word of mouth) did well but didn’t resonate enough with audiences to push it higher.

Maleficent at number two worldwide!
